The High School Journalism and IB DP Film Teacher is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive curriculum that equips students with essential skills in journalism, media literacy, and film studies. This role involves instructing students on journalistic principles, multimedia production techniques, and critical analysis of media and film content. The teacher fosters an environment that encourages student creativity, curiosity, and ethical responsibility in media and film practices.
Status of Position
This is a full-time position with Académie Lafayette. This is an exempt position pursuant to the U.S. Department of Labor.
Reporting
The Design Teacher reports to their campus/building principal.
Responsibilities
The High School Journalism and Media Teacher plays a crucial role in preparing students for careers in journalism, media production, and related fields, as well as promoting media literacy and critical thinking skills essential for active citizenship in the digital age.
- Curriculum Development:
- Design and update a dynamic curriculum that aligns with state standards and integrates contemporary practices in journalism and media.
- Develop lesson plans, assignments, and projects that engage students in hands-on learning experiences across various media platforms and film production.
- Instruction:
- Deliver engaging and informative lessons on topics such as news writing, multimedia storytelling, ethics in journalism, and film analysis.
- Employ a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, discussions, workshops, and multimedia presentations, to accommodate diverse learning styles.
- Media Production:
- Provide instruction and guidance in media production techniques, including video editing, social media content production, photography, and digital publishing.
- Supervise and support students in creating multimedia content for school publications, websites, and social media platforms.
- Journalistic Skills Development:
- Coach students in honing their journalistic skills, such as conducting interviews, researching topics, fact-checking, and writing articles.
- Organize opportunities for students to participate in journalism competitions, internships, and extracurricular activities.
- Media Literacy Education:
- Teach critical thinking skills necessary for analyzing media messages, evaluating sources, and discerning bias in news coverage.
- Facilitate discussions on media literacy topics, including the role of media in society, media ownership, and the impact of technology on journalism.
- IB DP Film
- Introduce students to film as a form of art, reflecting the cultural context of its time.
- Guide students research and practice different film makers roles
- Prepare students for college-level film programs.
- Collaboration:
- Collaborate with other educators to integrate journalism and media concepts into interdisciplinary units and projects.
- Work closely with school administrators, parents, and community members to promote the importance of journalism education.
- Assessment and Feedback:
- Assess student learning through a variety of methods, including written assignments, multimedia projects, presentations, and examinations.
- Provide constructive feedback to students to help them improve their writing, reporting, and multimedia production skills.
- Professional Development:
- Stay informed about developments in journalism, media technology, and educational practices through professional development opportunities, conferences, and workshops.
- Continuously evaluate and refine teaching strategies to enhance student learning outcomes.
- Curriculum Development:
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, or a related field.
- Teaching certification or licensure (if required by state or school district).
- Prior teaching experience is preferred, especially in high school or secondary education settings.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency in multimedia production software and tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro, WordPress).
- Knowledge of journalistic ethics, media law, and industry standards.
- Ability to foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
