The Supplier Quality Engineer is responsible for maintaining and improving the quality of materials and components sourced from external suppliers. This role involves assessing supplier capabilities, establishing quality requirements, monitoring supplier performance, and implementing corrective actions as necessary to ensure product quality and compliance with company standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Supplier Assessment and Selection:

    • Evaluate potential suppliers based on their quality management systems, manufacturing processes, and quality performance history.
    • Participate in supplier audits and assessments to ensure compliance with quality standards and regulatory requirements.
  2. Quality Requirements Definition:

    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define quality requirements for materials and components.
    • Establish quality agreements and specifications with suppliers to ensure alignment on quality expectations.
  3. Supplier Performance Monitoring:

    • Monitor supplier performance through metrics such as defect rates, on-time delivery, and corrective action responsiveness.
    • Conduct regular quality reviews and meetings with suppliers to address issues and drive continuous improvement.
  4. Root Cause Analysis and Corrective Actions:

    • Investigate quality issues and non-conformances related to supplied materials/components.
    • Lead root cause analysis activities and implement corrective and preventive actions to address underlying issues.
  5. Supplier Development:

    • Provide guidance and support to suppliers to improve their quality management systems and processes.
    • Offer training and resources to help suppliers meet quality standards and enhance product quality.
  6. Risk Management:

    • Identify and assess risks associated with supplier quality, and develop risk mitigation strategies.
    • Work closely with suppliers to proactively address potential quality risks and prevent disruptions in the supply chain.
  7. Continuous Improvement:

    • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance supplier quality and optimize supply chain performance.
    • Implement best practices and quality tools to improve efficiency and effectiveness in supplier quality management.


To be a qualified candidate you must meet the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Quality Management, or related field. Advanced degree or relevant certifications (e.g., Six Sigma, ASQ) preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 yrs. proven experience in supplier quality management or related roles within a manufacturing or engineering environment.

Key to being successful in this role:

  • Strong understanding of quality management principles, standards, and methodologies (e.g., ISO 9001, AS9100).
  • Proficiency in quality tools and techniques such as statistical analysis, root cause analysis, and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external suppliers.
  • Analytical mindset with a focus on problem-solving and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and compliance standards relevant to the industry (e.g., FDA, ISO, ASME) is a plus.

Working Conditions:

  • The role typically operates in an office environment but may require occasional visits to supplier facilities for audits or quality assessments.
  • May involve some travel to domestic or international supplier locations as needed.
