PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Artist-in-Residence (AR) serves the Hillsborough City School District community, working with students at West School. The AR will provide real-world experience to elevate the education we provide to students. The AR will design and teach arts electives, design and provide staff development and training for teachers, and assist in the integration of the arts into the core curriculum. The Artist-in-Residence will report to the West School Principal for direction and performance evaluation. To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty listed below satisfactorily.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide technical support to certificated teachers in specific areas of expertise/discipline in accordance with California Visual and Performing Arts content standards
  • Prepare, design, and implement teacher training on integrating the visual arts into the core curriculum for teachers and docents 
  • Facilitate a learning environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage students seeking to deepen their knowledge within specific disciplines of the arts
  • Direct, support, and/or assist students in the visual arts
  • Work collaboratively with an instructional team of certificated classroom teachers
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key members/leaders within artistic circles to provide cutting-edge student instruction within specific areas of expertise
  • Push into classrooms during Art-in-Action lessons, supporting parent volunteers and classroom teaching staff
  • Conduct training sessions, following the Art-in-Action training manual or customized outline provided by HCSD
  • Manage and curate Art-in-Acon materials and supplies
  • Various other dues as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least one (1) year of experience training others within a specific art discipline
  • Experience in teaching and leading visual arts through a variety of media
  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Solid reputation for excellence within artistic circles
  • Proven record of successful student instruction within a specific discipline


KNOWLEDGE OF

  • Target craft or other specific field or discipline at a professional or expert level
  • Local and national arts landscape
  • Equipment or other tool necessary to demonstrate mastery and provide training to others; provide training to others within the specific target discipline


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The job of teaching and coaching includes standing, walking, sitting, bending, lifting 20 lbs., reaching, pushing/pulling, kneeling/crouching, use of hands, hearing, and vision. This role also requires employees to have and maintain their own vehicle, as moving between school sites and to locations within the county is required.

HEARING, VISION, SPEECH and PROCESSING
Close proximity hearing and clarity of vision near and far with various distance focus/refocus abilities are necessary for these tasks. This job requires a very articulate communicator, as many of the tasks involve direct conversation with co-workers, staff members, and the public. This person must be tactful and efficient with all whom they interact with.

HUMAN RELATIONS CHARACTERISTICS
Interactions with others are frequent, in-person, on the phone, and over email, so this person must be tactful, courteous, and professional. There are also tasks calling for independent work skills. Decision-making and problem-solving skills are continually engaged. The ability to work with teachers, parents, students, administrators, paraeducators, administrative assistants, and other staff as well as build and maintain relationships with colleagues across districts is necessary.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
This role does not subject workers to any extreme climatic conditions. The noise level is moderate. No vibrations, hazards, or atmospheric pollutants are present.

TEMPERAMENTS
The AR needs to be able to work collaboratively with others, express personal ideas/feelings, influence others, be flexible, and perform a variety of duties.
