General Description

Under the guidance of the Regulatory Compliance and Planning Manager, the Environmental Scientist is responsible for providing regulatory and environmental guidance, auditing, permitting, reporting, and general compliance related activities to ensure operational compliance across multiple environmental media styles including: NEPA, hazardous waste, industrial wastewater, stormwater, etc., with an emphasis on potable and wastewater. This position will collaborate with an experienced team to support environmental compliance, management, and stewardship programs.

How You Will Fulfill Your Mission

  • Provide program management support and subject matter expertise in areas which include drinking water, surface water, stormwater, SPCC plans, environmental resource permits, wetland delineation, industrial wastewater, domestic wastewater and septic systems, consumptive use, limited use wells, underground injection control, and construction dewatering.
  • Manage NASA-KSC water quality records.
  • Manage and update the stormwater permit layer in Geographic Information System (GIS).
  • Provide environmental consultation under section 7 of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and compliance assistance to KSC organizations.
  • Participate in NEPA checklist reviews and development of Record of Environmental Consideration (REC) documents.
  • Participates in spill, release, and emissions event/incident investigations as assigned.
  • Participate in regulatory agency inspections and NASA Environmental and Energy Functional Reviews (EEFRs) and developing/implementing corrective actions to inspection findings.
  • Review proposed regulations and identify impacts and risks to NASA-KSC operations.
  • Responsible for any environmental tasks that may be assigned to manage environmental department workload and site environmental compliance.
  • Assist NASA customers and other commercial tenants to ensure compliance with industrial wastewater permitting.
  • Support NEPA review of proposed projects and environmental checklists or designs to identify potential environmental impacts of project activities and processes.
  • Manage and update the KSC Industrial Wastewater Inventory (KIWI) as requested.
  • Support environmental due diligence efforts as assigned.
  • Support surveillance inspections as a subject matter expert for various environmental media such as stormwater, potable water, domestic wastewater and septic systems, and industrial wastewater.

Specific Knowledge/Certification Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of science in environmental science, environmental management, physical science, or related field.
  • Minimum four (4) years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of environmental regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team member across technical disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Government contracting experience.
