Job Summary: The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of diesel engines and related systems in a variety of vehicles and equipment. This includes diagnosing issues, performing preventative maintenance, and ensuring vehicles meet safety and performance standards. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical aptitude, a thorough understanding of diesel systems, and experience with heavy-duty vehicles.
Key Responsibilities:
- Diagnose and Repair:
- Inspect and diagnose engine malfunctions, mechanical issues, and electrical problems using diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Repair or replace defective parts such as engines, transmissions, fuel systems, exhaust systems, and electrical components.
- Preventative Maintenance:
- Perform regular maintenance tasks including oil changes, filter replacements, brake inspections, and other routine services to ensure vehicles operate efficiently.
- Conduct safety inspections and recommend necessary repairs or adjustments.
- Testing and Quality Assurance:
- Test repaired equipment for proper operation and compliance with manufacturer specifications and safety standards.
- Ensure all repairs and maintenance work meet quality standards and safety regulations.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of services performed, parts used, and labor hours.
- Communicate findings, repairs, and recommendations to supervisors or customers as needed.
- Technical Skills and Knowledge:
- Stay current with industry trends, new technologies, and best practices related to diesel engines and systems.
- Use specialized tools and equipment for diagnostics and repairs.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Follow all safety protocols and workplace regulations.
- Ensure compliance with environmental standards and proper disposal of hazardous materials.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical school or trade certification in diesel mechanics preferred.
- Proven experience as a diesel mechanic, preferably in a fleet or heavy equipment environment.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and mechanical components.
- Proficiency with diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Valid driver's license; CDL may be required depending on the job.
