AHPD Overview

The Arlington Heights Park District (AHPD) is a public park and recreation agency located in Arlington Heights, Illinois—one of the largest communities in Chicago's prestigious northwest suburban corridor. Job Specific Information

Come join our energetic, caring, and responsible staff in our day camps as a camp counselor. The ideal candidate will be available to work Monday-Friday with varying hours. Depending on which camp your work, days are Monday-Friday or M/W/F. Typical hours range from 4-8 hours.


This seasonal position runs June 10-August 2, with required training taking place the week of June 3rd. 


Essential Job Duties: 

  • Assists in creating an activity agenda for the day camp group for which the employee is directly responsible
  • Assists in organizing and structuring large and small group activities
  • Sets up and participates in day camp activities
  • Cleans up after activities and at the end of the day
  • Maintains head counts of campers in the morning, at swim times, and throughout the day
  • Supervises campers and is present on the pool deck and in the water during swim times
  • Enforces safety rules during day camp activities
  • Notifies the Day Camp Site Director and Day Camp Assistant Site Director of problems or concerns with individual campers or staff members
  • Administers first aid to staff and campers, as needed


Skills and Qualifications:

  • A minimum age of 16 at the start of the Day Cam program is required for this position
  • Previous experience in a child care setting or supervising children's activities or programs preferred
  • Ability to respond to inquiries and requests received from the general public
  • Capacity to provide a high level of customer service to internal and external customers
  • Ability to maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees, children and the general public
  • Ability to work with general direction from immediate supervisor
  • Capacity to work and maintain composure in periods of high activity and in emergency situations
  • Capacity to follow through on tasks to completion
  • Ability to work in a team atmosphere, promoting positive work relationships with supervisors and co-workers
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership qualities to perform required work
  • Capacity to be self-motivated and achieve assigned goals
  • Ability to maintain self-control and composure in difficult situations
  • Capacity to perform CPR and first aid, when required
