Position Summary

The Embedded Software Engineering Manager is a blend of resource management (50%), technical leadership (30%), and software development (20%).

Team Management and Development:

  • Directly supervise and mentor subordinate software developers.
  • Foster a positive work environment, promote collaboration, and resolve conflicts.
  • Participate in recruitment, onboarding, and training to ensure employee effectiveness.
  • Identify development needs, provide growth opportunities, and align goals with senior management.
  • Manage budget for the software engineering organization.

Performance Management and Conflict Resolution

  • Conduct performance appraisals, provide regular feedback, and address performance issues.
  • Recognize and reward exceptional performance while resolving employee complaints and grievances.
  • Act as a point of escalation for complex issues, ensuring timely resolutions and a harmonious work environment.

Policy Compliance and Communication

  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, laws, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Promote ethical behavior, integrity, and maintain awareness of regulatory requirements.
  • Establish clear channels of communication, facilitate cross-functional collaboration, and promote transparency.

Process Improvement and Goal Achievement:

  • Drive process improvements, streamline workflows, and monitor progress towards goals.
  • Implement corrective actions when necessary and foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Collaborate with senior engineering management to define processes, goals, and objectives.

Technical Leadership Responsibilities

  • Participate in Software Development and New Product Introduction Life Cycles: proposal development, planning, software development, engineering test, and first article test.
  • Work closely with external government and commercial customers, participate in design reviews, and deliver engineering-level documentation as required by contracts.
  • Collaborate with HW and FPGA designers to determine and support engineering dependencies.
  • Work with Program Managers to develop detailed SW plans including schedules and resource loading.
  • Weekly progress tracking to plan and reporting to project stakeholders.

Software Development Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain real-time embedded software for various microcontroller platforms.
  • Employ modular and portable software design techniques.
  • Document software architecture: requirements, design, and test so that it can be efficiently maintained by developers with new product features.
  • Perform software versioning at established project milestones.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in C/C++ programming languages, with a strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software design principles.
  • Hands-on experience with embedded real-time operating systems such as embedded/Yocto-based Linux, VxWorks, MQX.
  • Familiarity with microcontroller architectures including Freescale and ARM, FPGA SoC s such as Xilinx Zynq UltraScale and Altera Agilex and development tools (IDEs, debuggers, emulators).
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and issue tracking systems (e.g., JIRA).
  • Embedded lower-layers, HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer), Device Driver Implementation experience.
  • Experience with device drivers for peripherals such as I2C, PCIe, UART, GPIO, SPI, and DMA.
  • Experience with hardware design and schematic review.

Not Required but Considered a Plus

  • Hardware experience:
    1. Board-level schematic understanding and debug
  • Implement device drivers, BSPs (Board Support Packages), and low-level firmware to support board bring-up and hardware functionality.
    1. Bench test equipment (digital oscilloscope, logic analyzer, spectrum analyzer)
  • DSP, Wireless Communications, RF experience:
    1. Defining, analyzing, and validating wireless communication requirements spanning user data network processing through RF
    2. End-to-end SATCOM ground station architecture from the physical layer through the application layer
    3. Communication waveform experience (DVB-S2X, DSSS, FHSS)
  • DoD experience:
  • Satisfying DoD contractual obligations: Hardware/Software Requirements Specifications (HRS/SRS) and Hardware/Software Design Documents (HDD/SDD)
  • Presenting to DoD customers: System Design Review (SDR), Preliminary Design Review (PDR), Critical Design Review (CDR)
  • Active DoD Top Secret clearance
  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
