Job DescriptionUnder direction of Lead Mechanical Welder/Machinist , performs a wide variety of duties relating to machine shop operations; lays out and sets up machine work on engine lathes, drill presses, shaper, boring mill, milling machine, grinders, band saws, knife grinders, roll grinder and benchwork; uses hand tools, and variety of machinist tools; insures safety of self, others, and equipment in all work areas.
Role and Responsibilities
Produces replacement parts and makes repairs to production equipment or parts, as assigned, using any or all of the above captioned machine shop Equipment or tools.
Sets up and determines feed rate, speed, tooling and tool grinding, according to work being performed, type metal, etc., to complete work in an efficient manner.
Works from drawings or part samples; performs entire sequence of operations necessary to produce finished work.
Learn and perform PM/PDM tasks and best work practices.
Promotes Good housekeeping and 6S standards.
Provides all required feedback when the job has been completed.
Promotes Safety and Environmental Awareness on all jobs. Required to hold a five minute safety briefing discussion before starting any job.
Uses precision tools and instruments for measuring and for holding tolerances to as close as 0.0001 of an inch.
Machines parts for other trades as needed or for placing in stores.
Operates roll grinder and knife grinders as directed.
Crew assignments and duties may vary at times based upon job & skill requirements, as well as available crew personnel to complete the work safely and efficiently.
Repairs turbines and boiler feed water pumps; performs other comparable and related duties as directed; insures safety of self and others by consistently following safety procedures in accordance with good housekeeping and mill safety standards.
Attends and participates in the appropriate training for the use of fire extinguishing equipment and notification procedures should a small, containable fire ignite in the work area.

Associate’s Degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
