Organization Description

Growing Places is a nonprofit serving North Central Massachusetts since 2001 that seeks to improve the health of our region through an equitable, just, local food system and sustainable environment. Our mission is to inspire and connect the NCMA community to create equitable access to healthy food and environmental sustainability through education, collaboration, and advocacy.

Program Description

Greening the Gateway Cities Program (GGCP) was created with a goal to increase the number of trees planted in urban residential areas of the Massachusetts Gateway Cities. In each Gateway City, the program is carried out by a partnership consisting of Department of Conservation and Recreation Urban Foresters, who perform site visits and tree plantings, and a local community outreach organization that promotes and outreaches for the program. In Fitchburg and Leominster, Growing Places acts as the community outreach organization, creating direct mail campaigns and social media content, doing canvassing, participating in outreach events, and recruiting volunteers to assist with tree stewardship and increasing urban tree canopy.

Position Description

Growing Places is looking to hire at least two enthusiastic individuals to conduct neighborhood outreach to spread the word about the GGC program in Fitchburg and Leominster. The individuals will conduct door knocking on evenings and weekends in targeted areas in Fitchburg and Leominster where there is low tree canopy to deliver GGCP marketing materials to plant new trees and promote existing tree care. The canvassers will be supported by Growing Places team to strategize where to canvass and be provided with all materials necessary. Bi-lingual candidates will be given first preference (Spanish/English).

Requirements

The ideal Tree Canvasser will…

- Have familiarity with the Fitchburg and Leominster area

- Love people and have excellent interpersonal skills

- Have a passion for environmental justice

- Have familiarly how to use an iPad

- Have the ability to work independently

- Have reliable transportation

Benefits

This is a stipended position estimated at 20 to 30 hours/month at $25 per hour. Hours are flexible on weekends and evenings.
