POSITION SUMMARY:

The Seasonal cook works directly with the Food and Sanitation Coordinator to deliver and ensure nutritional satisfaction of Camp Wakonda’s Food Services by assisting the Food and Sanitation Coordinator with food ordering, inventory, preparation, serving, meal break down, general kitchen and dining hall cleaning.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist in the day-to-day operations of the camp’s food service.
  2. Prepare and cook food as the menu indicates; utilizing boiling, broiling, steaming or roasting of meat, poultry, vegetables, salads, soups and gravies.
  3. Bake breads, muffins, and dessert items.
  4. Ability to maintain proper food temperatures and assess condition of food.
  5. Assist with inventory management.
  6. Communicate changes in inventory to Food and Sanitation Coordinator
  7. Maintain routine sanitation and upkeep of the kitchen, equipment and facilities.
  8. Maintain high standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and safety.
  9. Clean, sanitize and maintain all food preparation equipment, kitchen floors and food storage areas.
  10. Reduce waste, reuse items and recycle as much as possible.
  11. Adhere to all established health code regulations.
  12. Work as a member of the camp staff team.
  13. Maintain effective communication with administrative camp staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must be available between [May 17 through August 10, 2024]
  2. Must be 18 years old and prior experience with youth and/or a food service setting.
  3. Must have or attain Missouri Serve Safe certification prior to camp.
  4. Possess a practical understanding and comprehensive knowledge of food service, storage, and cleanliness standards.
  5. Exemplify the YMCA core values of “Caring, Honesty, Respect, & Responsibility.”
  6. Able to work a flexible schedule to accommodate changes in program schedule.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  1. Safety-sensitive position: Apply appropriate safety and emergency procedures.
  2. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to weather and meal prep activities.
  3. Endurance to work with daily exposure to heat, varying temperatures, hot stoves, steam, cleaning products, and on occasion, insects.
  4. Physical ability to respond to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of staff.
  5. Ability to lift to 50 pounds.
  6. 90% of the day prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, and stretching.
  7. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate kitchen equipment.
  8. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, camp setting and work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities.
