Paralegal I (Temporary)
Regulatory Services Department (RSD)

Salary Range: $27.00 to $27.00 per hour
FLSA: Temporary and Limited Term Employment, Hourly
Duration: The duration of this temporary assignment will not exceed 6 months.

The WSBA's mission is to serve the public and the members of the Bar, to ensure the integrity of the legal profession, and to champion justice.

Purpose and Position Summary:

The key functions of the RSD paralegal position are to provide support and assistance to the lawyers in the Regulatory Services Department, provide support and research assistance to lawyers, supervisors and staff liaisons working with regulatory and Supreme Court boards in the department, and provide support to the department director in administrative matters.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist in providing staff support to regulatory and Supreme Court Boards, Committees, Panels, and Task Forces, including:

  • Coordinating meeting and hearing schedules, and making facility, travel, court reporter and other meeting arrangements.
  • Preparation, organization, and distribution of meeting materials, and expense tracking.
  • Drafting agendas and correspondence.
  • Attending meetings and hearings, taking notes, and drafting minutes.
  • Responding and/or effectuating responses to email inquiries sent to the LLLT and LPO mailboxes.
  • Assisting in preparing and grading LPO examinations and coordinating with exam graders to complete grading exams.
  • Maintaining exam statistics.
  • Updating and maintaining information for the LLLT Board and LP Board, including lists of members and information relating to the appointment of new members.

Draft documents for review by RSD lawyers as needed:

  • Documents to draft include letters, reports, summaries of research results and conclusions, legal memoranda, pleadings, and other legal documents and attachments; and amendments to WSBA bylaws and court rules.
  • Proofread and edit documents prepared by RSD lawyers.

Process grievances:

  • Opening grievance files against Limited License Legal Technicians (LLLTs) and Limited Practice Officers (LPOs).
  • Analyze grievance information for coding, accurately making entries in the discipline database, process grievant and respondent information, and communicate directly with grievant, respondent, and corresponding board chair, discipline committee chair, or staff liaison to the board, to facilitate disposition of grievance files, and maintain the public record of LPO and LLLT discipline.

Education Required:
  • Paralegal degree or certificate or very comparable degree or substantial equivalent, related experience.
Education Preferred:
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A., B.S.)
Experience Preferred:
  • Paralegal experience.
  • High level legal administrative assistant experience
Competencies (Skills/Abilities) Required:
  • Uphold the highest level of confidentiality and integrity with privileged information, documents, records, etc.
  • Utmost attention to detail.
  • Advanced reading, writing and editing skills; analytical skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and as a team player.
  • Ability to prioritize, work efficiently, and use good judgment.
  • Excellent social and verbal communication skills appropriate to maintaining good relations with the public and members.
  • Computer: Intermediate to advanced experience using of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook), and Adobe Pro.
  • Keyboarding, phone, copier, scanner, printer and FAX Machines: Basic operation.
Working Conditions:

This position, while primarily remote, must be flexible to work in office or travel within WA state as deemed necessary, or as required. This position may also have the option to work in-office. For remote work, must have an adequate home/work environment and internet access, for performing work of a highly sensitive and confidential nature.

Employment with the Washington State Bar Association mandates that WSBA Staff must reside within the State of Washington at the time of hire, and during active employment status.

The essential functions of the job that must be performed, with or without a reasonable accommodation: This position must be able to regularly work five days per week in an office type environment (remote or in office), possess the ability to primarily sit/stand and use a computer, and lift/push/pull items weighing up to 25 pounds. Must be able to operate a computer keyboard, and other standard office equipment (e.g., printer/scanner/fax/telephone). This position must be able to read, write, and speak with others in English.
