Job Summary: The Associate Medical Director is a physician qualified by training and experience in the
practice of medicine. He/she works directly under the supervision of the hospice Medical Director. The
Associate Medical Director provides clinical oversight and assumes the Medical Director role when he/she is
unavailable.
Qualifications/ Educational Requirements:
1. Qualified by training and experience in the practice of Medicine or Osteopathy
2. Licensed as a Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy in the State of practice without restriction or subject to any
disciplinary or corrective action.
3. Knowledgeable about psychosocial and medical aspects of hospice care.
4. Current CPR certification.
Responsibilities/essential functions: Must be able to perform the following essential job functions with or
without reasonable accommodations.
1. Assumes the role and responsibilities of Medical Director when he/she is unavailable.
2. Reviews patient eligibility for services, including admissions, recertifications, and discharges.
3. Communicates and collaborates with the patient's attending physician to coordinate patient care.
4. Performs home visits, joint visits, patient assessments and interventions.
5. Participates in the IDT meeting, in development, revision, and approval of the patient plan of care.
6. Communicates and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team and serves as a resource.
7. Acts as a role model and provides consultation to attending physicians on end-of-life care, palliative care, and
specialty patient populations.
8. Documents the services and treatments provided to hospice patients.
9. Signs orders and plan of care timely within the time frame set by state and federal law.
10. Assist with the development and revision of policies for clinical care, emergency care, and medical research
when applicable.
11. Participates in the Quality Assurance Performance Improvement (QAPI) plan by offering expertise in the
selection of data elements that are clinically relevant for the patient and recognized as valid for the hospice
quality assessment and performance improvement program.
12. Is available for after-hours consultation, assistance, and decisions regarding patient care when necessary.
13. Provides continuing education to hospice employees.
14. Acts as a liaison in the community.
15. Performs all services and duties if under Contractual Agreement in strict accordance with all laws, federal and
state regulations, and hospice policies and procedures.
16. Comply with Medical Practice Act or Osteopathic Practice Act in the state of practice and all rules and
regulations of the State Board of Medical Examiners or State Board of Osteopathic Physicians
