GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The MRI Technologist is responsible for performing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The technologist ensures the safe and efficient operation of MRI equipment, prepares patients for procedures, and maintains accurate patient records. The role requires a strong understanding of MRI technology, patient care, and adherence to safety protocols.
Duties
MRI PROCEDURES:
·Perform MRI examinations according to physician orders and established protocols.
·Ensure proper positioning of patients and equipment to obtain optimal imaging results.
·Adjust MRI parameters and sequences as necessary to enhance image quality.
·Monitor patients during the procedure to ensure their safety and comfort.
PATIENT CARE:
·Greet and prepare patients for MRI procedures, explaining the process and addressing any concerns.
·Obtain patient medical history and screen for contraindications to MRI, such as implants or metal objects.
·Provide appropriate patient care before, during, and after the procedure.
·Ensure patient privacy and confidentiality are maintained at all times.
EQUIPMENT OPERATION and MAINTENANCE:
·Greet and prepare patients for MRI procedures, explaining the process and addressing any concerns.
·Obtain patient medical history and screen for contraindications to MRI, such as implants or metal objects.
·Provide appropriate patient care before, during, and after the procedure.
·Ensure patient privacy and confidentiality are maintained at all times.
SAFETY and COMPLIANCE:
·Adhere to all radiation safety and MRI safety protocols to protect patients, staff, and self from unnecessary exposure.
·Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, including those set by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), American College of Radiology (ACR), and relevant state and federal regulations.
·Maintain a clean and organized work environment, following infection control and safety guidelines.
DOCUMENTATION and RECORD KEEPING:
·Maintain accurate and complete patient records, including procedure details, images, and any adverse reactions.
·Document and report any incidents or discrepancies according to department policy.
·Ensure timely and accurate transmission of images and reports to the referring physician.
COLLABORATION and COMMUNICATION:
·Collaborate with radiologists, referring physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure quality patient care.
·Communicate effectively with patients and their families, providing clear instructions and answering questions.
·Participate in departmental meetings, continuing education, and training sessions as required.
Requirements
EDUCATION:
·Associate's degree in Radiologic Technology or related field. Bachelor's degree preferred.
·Completion of an accredited MRI technology program.
LICENSE/ CERTIFICATION:
·Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in MRI.
·State licensure as required.
·IV certification preferred
·Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
EXPERIENCE:
·Previous experience as a MRI Technologist preferred, but new graduates with clinical training will be considered.
SKILLS and APTITUDES:
·Proficiency in operating MRI equipment and understanding of MRI physics and technology.
·Strong patient care and communication skills.
·Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
·Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
·Ability to handle stressful situations and respond to emergencies effectively.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
·Ability to lift and move patients and equipment.
·Manual dexterity and visual acuity to operate MRI equipment and evaluate images.
·Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
·May require prolonged periods of standing, reaching and bending to move patients and heavy equipment.
·Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations
·Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:
·Work is performed in an outpatient imaging center environment.
·May require standing for extended periods and assisting patients with mobility.
·Exposure to magnetic fields and potential allergens such as contrast agents.
·Must adhere to safety protocols and wear appropriate protective equipment as required.
·Variable work hours, including some evenings weekends as needed.
·Work is performed in a professional office environment.
·Involves frequent telephone contact and interaction with others.
·May involve contact with sick people.
