Urban Forestry Intern

City of College Park - Public Works


The City of College Park, MD, is currently seeking a student studying Urban Forestry, Environmental Sciences, or Agriculture for a 32-hour/week paid internship in our Public Works Department. The Intern will support City functions and efforts as needed in the field collection of urban tree data and map creation.


We are seeking a self-starter who can effectively manage existing resources with little direction or supervision. This position, while under the direct supervision and direction of the City Arborist or Public Works Director, is largely independent in day-to-day tasks and will assist the City Arborist with planning, plantings, projects, map creation, as well as other projects. An ideal candidate will be able to take existing knowledge and apply it to City operations and resources to best fit them in their role supporting the Department of Public Works. The hourly rate will be $15.00 for an undergraduate or $20.00 for a graduate student.


Job Duties:

  • Works with the arborist to meet with prospective homeowners for pre-planning meetings.
  • Create, Validate, and Maintain City Geospatial Information, including land/property features, Utility features, and transportation features and their attributions.
  • Create maps of city property and planting projects on residential property.
  • Assist the arborist with data collection for tree maintenance projects and mapping projects as needed.
  • Provide programmatic support to city engineering, public works, and planning offices as needed regarding data handling, cartographic creation and support, and other tasks as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Be currently enrolled as an Undergraduate or Graduate Student at the University of Maryland in Urban Forestry, Environmental Sciences, or Agriculture.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with residents about tree planting.
  • Ability to use a basic cartographic program to produce maps.
  • Ability to collect other data as needed for public works.
  • Fluent knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of:

  • Maryland tree species.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Access, specifically with design components or ArcGIS functionality.
  • Critical eye for graphic design and attention to detail.
