The Bereavement Counselor will provide grief and loss counseling and education services under the direction of the Director.

Hours: 8:30am-4:30pm 5 days per week

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Providing therapeutic intervention and continuity of care for bereaved families and/or individuals seeking bereavement counseling.
  • Assuring accurate assessments, counseling interventions and plan of care of clients/ families.
  • Executing initial and routine assessment, interventions and documents case notes in a clinical psychosocial manner in accordance with policy and procedure to ensure compliance.
  • Establish, implement, and monitor clinical plans of bereavement care.
  • Provide supportive phone calls and or home/office counseling sessions.
  • Refer, monitor and assure appropriate follow-up of families receiving bereavement support from volunteers.
  • Participate in regular clinical supervision.
  • Develop grief and bereavement materials as needed.
  • Facilitate bereavement support groups.
  • Provide assistance with grief and bereavement-related agency activities
  • Publicizes programs through media opportunities and personal appearances, as directed.
  • Networks with other community agencies to keep them informed of Outreach Department Services availability to families/friends of Niagara Hospice patients.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Associates Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Mental Health, Psychology, Human Services or related degree from accredited college or University; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Valid Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three years direct care, counseling, education, or training experience with concentration in bereavement, grief and loss
  • A minimum of one year direct care experience with a human-service agency
  • Ability to possess and/or learn new counseling theories and interventions.
  • Strong assessment skills and ability to make referrals to the community
  • Strong individual and family counseling skills with the ability to relate well to needs of the families
  • Knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of death, dying and bereavement.
