Role Responsibilities

The Peer Specialist facilitates recovery discussions with clients. The Peer Specialist must be able to articulate personal goals for recovery and support and aid clients in identifying and creating goals. Assists in developing recovery plans with the skills, strengths, supports and resources to aid clients in achieving those goals. Assists in obtaining services that suit the client’s recovery needs. Assists patients in setting up and sustaining self-help and other supportive community resources. Teaches and role models the value of every individual’s recovery experience. Models effective coping techniques and self-help strategies. Assists clients in developing empowerment skills and combatting stigma through self-advocacy. Documentation must meet all applicable standards and established performance benchmarks. The position reports directly to the hiring Peer Supervisor. The Peer Specialist performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Must be able to work within a multi-disciplinary treatment team. Must have excellent engagement, time management and organizational skills. Routine hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday with flexibility for schedule changes to allow for appointments outside of routine hours. Must have reliable vehicle for transportation. Mileage paid. The Peer Specialist reports directly to the Clinic Manager and is responsible and accountable for the adherence to and promotion of the compliance policy.

Salary

  • 90% $16.24/ hour to start;
  • 95% $17.15 /hour at 6 mos. with satisfactory performance
  • 100% $18.05/ hour at 1 year with satisfactory performance

Required Education and/or Certifications, Experience, Skills

  • High School Diploma
  • Certified Peer Specialist at hire or within 6 months of hire
  • Texas driver’s license in good standing as defined by Texana Center’s procedure
  • 1 year of lived experience with mental illness and treatment and recovery in a community center setting

Preferred Education and/or Certifications, Experience, Skills

  • Certified Peer Specialist
  • Previous paid or volunteer experience providing peer support in a mental health or substance abuse treatment setting.
  • 1 year of work experience providing direct services within a Behavioral Health or Social Service setting
  • Spanish speaking

Job Related Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to perform SAMA and CPR.
  • Must be able to perform moderate lifting and carrying (15-44#), pushing, stooping, repeated bending, reaching above shoulder, simple grasping, hearing, walking, sitting and twisting.
  • Must have ability to see, write, operate office equipment, operate a motor vehicle and have depth perception.
  • Qualified individual must be able to perform these functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
