TITLE: Camp Child Advocate

REPORTS TO: Shelter Children’s Services Coordinator

CLASSIFICATION: Part Time Temporary Non-Exempt

GENERAL DESCRIPTION & QUALIFICATIONS: The Camp Child Advocate is responsible for providing support, advocacy, crisis intervention, childcare and transportation to children participating in Turning Point’s Summer Camp Program. This position entails that the advocate interacts with community organizations to create, schedule, and implement child centered activities. A Bachelor’s Degree in human service or child focused concentration preferred, OR an Associate Degree and at least 1-year experience working in a setting that services children and/or families. Experience working with children is a must. Empathic listening skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Must be energetic and motivated. Knowledge of domestic and sexual violence preferred. Must have the ability to work with diverse populations. Must have reliable transportation, insurance, a valid Michigan Driver’s License and a good driving record. Must pass a criminal background check as a condition of employment.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Implement agency and program mission and empowerment philosophy
  2. Administer and implement agency policies and procedures including confidentiality, necessary documentation and professional ethics
  3. Utilize appropriate empathy, active listening and conflict resolution skills
  4. Have a working knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence, sexual assault and homelessness
  5. Follow Turning Point’s policy on reporting suspected/witnessed abuse or neglect to Child Protective Services
  6. Ensure the safety and well being of all children
  7. Supervise children and provide transportation for field trip
  8. Act as an advocate to parent and staff on behalf of the child
  9. Role model for children and mothers appropriate interaction including praise, choices and consequences, confrontation and problem solving
  10. Attend meetings, workshops and in-services as requested by Children’s Services Coordinator
  11. Assist with the planning and implementation of summer camp activities including gathering materials and clean up
  12. Crisis Intervention and Prevention
  13. Conduct relationships with staff to promote mutual respect, improvement of services, and interdepartmental program development and planning
  14. Notify the Children’s Services Coordinator, Shelter Director or Deputy Director of any emergency situations that may affect Turning Point staff and clients
  15. Responsible for any other job activities as required by Children’s Service Coordinator
