Job DescriptionJob DescriptionPosition TitleWindows\VDI System Management Engineer
PurposeEast Tennessee Research Facility is seeking applications for the position of Windows\VDI Systems Management Engineer in the System Management and Engineering Team. The team manages 14K+ client and server systems in a highly dynamic research community utilizing many configuration management systems. This position will focus primarily on delivery of virtual client solutions to enable a hybrid workforce. Major Duties/Responsibilities
  • Design, engineer, and maintain centralized management solutions for Windows clients
  • Engineer solutions to improve productivity, flexibility, and security for computing resources
  • Optimize automated solutions for management and deployment applications, operating systems, updates, and configuration changes
  • Assist with the highest level of troubleshooting as needed, working with manufacturers, vendors, support staff, and customers
  • Create and maintain internal operating procedures and end user documentation
Required Qualifications
  • Strong understanding of Citrix and/or VMWare VDI infrastructures and supporting technologies.
  • Extensive experience scripting using PowerShell
  • Expert experience troubleshooting Windows (installation, configuration, management and operations)
  • Group Policy management experience
  • Microsoft 365 background with emphasis on collaborative tools
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English
  • U.S. Citizenship is required, and the ability to obtain Department of Energy security clearance
  • The ability to work occasional extended and weekend hours to resolve urgent problems or meet critical milestones is required.
Desired technical qualifications include:
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager packaging/deployment
  • A background applying configuration/hardening guidelines (DISA, CIS, etc.)
  • Understanding of MDT and MECM operating system deployment
  • A broad familiarity of management solutions for power management, AV, health monitoring, and cyber security
Other desirable technical skills
  • Experience supporting Linux and Macintosh systems
  • Database experience
  • Web Server experience

Experience
  • Experience working in a science or technology environment is desired
  • 8+ years supporting Windows systems
  • Proven three or more years managing a VDI infrastructure in an operational environment is required, with five or more years’ experience preferred.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a computer, engineering, or science-related discipline is preferred. However, practical experience is more important than educational background, particularly for candidates with eight or more years of practical experience.
