SUMMARY:

The Press Weld Assistant supports the Press Weld Operator by performing a variety of tasks that ensure the efficient operation of the press welding process. This role is responsible for loading materials, handling materials, and effectively communicating order details and specifications to the operator. The assistant helps set up, run, and monitor the machines, performs preventative maintenance, and ensures that grating meets the specified requirements. This position requires making necessary adjustments and tool changes to maintain quality standards and supporting the operator as needed. The assistant must work well within a team, taking direction from the Press Weld Operator and plant leadership, while also being able to communicate effectively and back up the operator when necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-speed environment, follow all operating procedures, work instructions, and adhere to safe work practices in a continuous improvement focused environment.
  • Assist in the set-up of equipment, press adjustments, die settings, materials used, proper spacing requirements, and what programming is needed to ensure the safe operation of the press welder and overall quality of products produced.
  • Maintain regular communication with press weld team and material handlers.
  • Identify and escalate non-conformances while maintaining focus on minimizing scrap and rework operations.
  • Assist with the loading of components, unload the grating panels or where needed to keep teams on track to meet or exceed established productivity expectations.
  • Assist in machine upkeep, machine health, and reliability through participation in daily and continual preventative maintenance activities.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities relative to improving key performance indicators.
  • Accurately complete necessary paperwork and time sheets to properly manage inventory and job cost.
  • Keep personal and common work areas clean and organized.
  • Perform other duties and cross-train as assigned by supervision.

EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE AND PROFICIENCIES:

In addition to a High School diploma or equivalent, the following skills and/or experience are required:

  • Able to use and operate safely various hand and power tools.
  • Able to use and operate safely overhead cranes and forklifts.
  • Able to read and understand both metric and standard tape measures.
  • Able to read and interpret documents such as travelers, various procedures, and instructions.
  • Able to add and subtract two-digit numbers and multiply and divide by 10’s and 100’s without the use of a calculator.
  • Able to perform mathematical operations of whole numbers and fractions in both standard and metric units of measurements.
  • Write short notes or memos.
  • Read, interpret, and comprehend blueprint drawings.
  • Must be a driven team player who takes initiative to learn and grow; takes pride in group dynamics and motivating others; possess both written and verbal communication skills.

The following experience and abilities are preferred:

  • 1 plus years prior manufacturing experience with a steel or aluminum manufacturer.
  • 1 plus years’ experience with overhead cranes and forklifts.
  • The ability to follow various documented instructions and procedures.
  • Be able to read, comprehend, and interpret blueprint drawings.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is encountered with repetitive movement tasks, which requires the employee to stand, walk, stoop, bend, reach, grasp, push, and pull grating material of various sizes and weights for long periods of time. Must regularly lift or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 75 pounds, using proper lifting techniques, help from another employee, or other available resources such as lifting or moving equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly working on the production floor. The work environment requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Exposure to noise, dust, heat, and cold on a regular basis. Exposure to machine and tool hazards requiring care and attention to safety rules and standards.
