St. Gabriel's Hospice & Palliative Care is looking for Volunteers in the San Antonio area 

Volunteers help fulfill the promise of Hospice in many ways. They are the hand to help and to hold, the friendly face that brings warm conversation or welcome respite. From providing companionship to offering assistance with the activities of daily living, volunteers provide invaluable services in several areas of specialization:

Patient/Family Care Volunteers provide companionship to the patient and respite for the caregiver as a part of the Hospice Team. Volunteers help by visiting, reading to patients, writing letters, providing transportation, running errands, preparing meals, providing hair care and light housekeeping. Perhaps the most important thing the volunteer offers is listening, sharing quiet moments, giving a gentle pat on the arm and just being there.

Bereavement Volunteers offer support to families and friends after the death of a loved one. During the bereavement process, this specially trained volunteer helps those touched by the loss to work through the emotions of grief and rebuild and reaffirm their life.

Administrative Volunteers assist Hospice staff by providing clerical support, preparing mailings or working on other special projects that help make Hospice care available to family, friends and neighbors of our community.

 Please note: This is an unpaid VOLUNTEER opportunity.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High School Diploma, preferred
  • Licensure: Must have current driver's license if providing direct patient care. Professional Volunteers must meet requirements of specific licensure rules.
  • Skills: Must be able to read and write in English and follow written and verbal instructions in English effectively. Demonstrates interest in the welfare of ill and elderly.
  • Transportation: Reliable transportation. Valid and current auto liability insurance if providing direct patient care.
  • Criminal History: Must agree to and pass a criminal history check.

Environmental and Working Conditions:

  • Patient’s home - various conditions; possible exposure to blood and bodily fluids and infectious diseases; ability to work flexible schedule; ability to travel locally; some exposure to unpleasant weather. Must have Hepatitis acceptance/declination for patient care volunteers.
  • Office - routine office environment, noise level may be moderately high, ability to work a flexible schedule

Physical and Mental Effort:

Prolonged standing and walking required. Occasional need to lift, pull, care and push items. Frequent need to stoop, kneel and reach while accessing files Requires working under some stressful conditions to meet deadlines, to identify patient needs, to make quick decisions and meet patient/family needs. Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.

Essential Functions:

  • Direct Patient Care
    • Provide direct care/companionship to patient.
    • Provide preparation of meals.
    • Provide a clean, safe and comfortable patient environment.
    • Promote positive, supportive, respectful communication to patient/family and staff members.
    • Provide and environment which promotes respect for patient, privacy and property.
  • Administrative Support
    • Provide clerical support to office staff.
    • Participate in special projects/fund raisers.
  • Professional Volunteer
    • Provide services according to the rules and standard of practice of their respective disciplines.
