Are you passionate about telling the stories that shape the Lone Star State? Join us at Community Impact as our State Editor, where you'll lead a small team of dedicated journalists in delivering impactful and insightful coverage focused on our core coverage areas: development, health care, education, government, and transportation.
As a storyteller and strategist, you'll play a pivotal role in sharing stories Texans need to know, keeping our readers informed, engaged, and inspired through our monthly print newspaper and daily email newsletter.
Job requirements:
- Craft Compelling Narratives: Use your editorial expertise to shape articles that resonate with readers, ensuring accuracy, fairness, and clarity while adhering to AP Style and journalistic standards.
- Drive Innovation: Embrace new storytelling techniques to captivate audiences and elevate our journalism to new heights.
- Foster Collaboration: Cultivate a culture of collaboration and excellence, working closely with reporters and editors across newsrooms in Austin, Houston, DFW, and San Antonio to manage production efforts.
- Stay Ahead of the Curve: Stay on top of evolving trends, emerging issues, and breaking news across the state, guiding the team in identifying compelling angles and unique perspectives that set us apart.
- Engage the Community: Build relationships with key stakeholders, cultivate sources, and actively engage with our readership to ensure our coverage reflects the diverse voices and experiences across Texas.
- Utilize Data: Infographics are a key part of our business model. This role will be responsible for not only bringing data and ideas to the table but also helping our reporters sift through data and generate original story ideas.
You should apply to our State Editor role if you have:
- A Passion for Storytelling: A deep love for storytelling and a relentless curiosity about the world around you.
- 10 years or more of solid journalism experience and want to lead our efforts to tell the most important stories around the state
- Proven Leadership Skills: Previous experience in journalism leadership roles, with a track record of inspiring and motivating teams to achieve excellence.
- Industry Expertise: At least 10 years experience covering government or politics in Texas as a reporter or editor.
- Editorial Excellence: Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills, with a keen eye for detail and a commitment to excellence.
- Strategic Thinking: Strong editorial judgment, with the ability to think strategically, anticipate trends, and identify opportunities for impactful storytelling.
- Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment, with a flexible mindset and a willingness to embrace new challenges.
- Ethical Compass: A commitment to upholding the highest standards of journalistic integrity, ethics, and professionalism.
- Texas Insight: Understanding of Texas state politics, issues, and communities is preferred.
