The American Lung Association has an excellent opportunity for a Director, Health Promotions. Working as a member of the Health Promotion & Education department, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through research, education, and advocacy.

The Director will lead all aspects of outdoor clean air environmental projects focused on diesel emissions reductions and the reduction of health risks associated with poor air quality. This includes grant writing, evaluation and reporting, managing staff to achieve key deliverables and overall project management of grant-funded programs. This is a grant funded position.

Location: The position is located at the American Lung Association’s Springfield, IL office and will be a hybrid of in-person and virtual work.

Responsibilities:

  • Propose, develop, and implement grant-funded environmental programs with a focus on diesel emissions reductions and the reduction of health risks associated with poor air quality.
  • Function as a subject matter expert relating to diesel emissions reduction, including performing complex mathematical calculations like Diesel Emission Quantifier (DEQ) calculations and applying these calculations to program proposals, grant writing, and communications.
  • Cultivate new partnerships and maintain current partnerships with all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Train and manage staff and ensure that all deliverables and key performance indicators are met.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree preferred. Alternatively, a bachelor’s degree in a STEM program or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Able to provide documentation of complex technical/scientific writing.
  • Able to perform advanced mathematical calculations and apply the results of such calculations to verbal and written statements. Experience with emissions calculations preferred.
  • A combination of education and/or experience in environmental policy and regulation.
  • Experience in project management with demonstrated ability to think strategically.
  • Basic understanding of public and/or non-profit budgeting and grant writing.
  • Able to address large groups and individual stakeholders effectively.
  • Experience managing and implementing community awareness, education, and programs specifically related to areas of environmental science/sustainability.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement new initiatives.
  • Experience with program administration preferred.
  • Experience with multiple types of computer software including the Microsoft suite of products, GIS, and coding preferred
  • Experience in a supervisory role strongly preferred.
  • Ability to lift approximately 25 lbs.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s license and your own reliable transportation with the ability to travel within assigned area up to 15% of the time for events, meetings and conferences, as well as the flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends with some overnights required.
  • Consistent with its mission, the American Lung Association maintains a smoke-free workplace; all employees must abstain from tobacco use in any form, including vaping.

Compensation: Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location. The target hiring range for this position is between $65,000 and $67,000 per annum.

  • Paid Leave - 10 vacation days in the first year (15 days thereafter), 2 personal days and 15 sick days per year, as well as 12 company-paid holidays per year. We also offer Paid Parental Leave for eligible employees.
