The American Lung Association has an excellent opportunity for two Development Interns in Las Vegas, NV. Alongside members of the Development team, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through research, education, and advocacy.
The intern will assist the American Lung Association Development staff to execute general administrative support for communications and local special events including, Great Dam Ride - Cycle for Air, SCALE THE STRAT - Fight for Air Climb; assist in development of media material such as press releases, fact sheets and briefing documents; Work to develop compelling media pitches and story angles.
This is an unpaid internship position requiring a minimum time commitment of 10 hours per week (flexible schedule) and must be eligible for course credit or fulfill an internship graduation requirement. This position is for Fall 2024 and must be completed by December 14, 2024.
PROJECTS
This is a great opportunity for the intern to enhance their skills in organization, multi-tasking and communications. The intern can expect to develop confidence and marketable skills by engaging in or assisting with many of the following activities:
Gain a basic understanding of the American Lung Association
- Become knowledgeable of mission, development, and communications efforts
- Gain technical training by utilizing internal learning management system (LMS) to complete lung health education and program training curricula; Gain a basic understanding of Convio, Brandhub, and social media platforms.
- Participate in staff meetings and learning opportunities
Development
- Assist with general administrative support for the Great Dam Ride - Cycle for Air, SCALE THE STRAT - Fight For Air Climb, and LUNG FORCE Walks to gain exposure to specific events terminology.
- Assist in data entry, tabling promotional events, mailings, event promotion dissemination and volunteer recruitment.
- Assist with brainstorming and providing creative ideas to execute a successful Great Dam Ride - Cycle for Air, SCALE THE STRAT - Fight For Air Climb, and LUNG FORCE Walks marketing, recruitment and fundraising plan.
Communications
- Assist with general administrative support for communications to gain exposure to specific events terminology.
- Assist in the development of media materials such as press releases, facts sheets and briefing documents, as well as working to develop compelling media pitches and story angles.
- Assist in compiling media lists, media calendars and communications plans.
- Assist with brainstorming and providing creative ideas to execute communications efforts for events, programs and advocacy efforts for teams throughout the Western Division.
Advocacy
- Research and summarize public health facts and figures.
- Assist in analyzing tobacco control policies in the areas of smoke-free outdoor air, smoke-free events and restricting sales of flavored tobacco products.
- Identify, schedule and conduct outreach events and presentation opportunities in Las Vegas, Henderson, Pahrump, and Reno.
- Develop and conduct presentations on smoke-free outdoor dining, smoke-free events, flavored tobacco and other tobacco related topics to various community groups in Las Vegas, Henderson, Pahrump, and Reno.
- Assemble health education materials for presentations and tabling events.
- Identify and recruit residents of local communities to participate in project activities.
- Assist with data collection for program evaluation and for preparation of semi- annual and final grant program reports.
- Assist with development of smoke-free activities and educational events.
Health Promotions
- Assist with general administrative support for secondhand smoke and tobacco prevention education to gain exposure to specific terminology.
- Assist in the office outreach efforts to encourage schools to offer lung health programming.
- Assist in compiling program data.
- Assist with brainstorming and providing creative ideas to execute secondhand smoke and tobacco prevention education programs.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Gain basic understanding of Convio, Brandhub, and social media platforms.
- Learn more about Non-Profit structure, including mission, development, and communications efforts.
- Gain technical training by utilizing internal learning management system (LMS) to complete lung health education and program training curricula.
- Learn about team building and collaborating with staff.
- Learn to cultivate relationships.
- Learn how to communicate in a professional office setting.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be working towards a bachelor’s degree in Non-Profit Management, Health Sciences or related field
- Qualified candidates must be enthusiastic, reliable, and interested in developing a career in business development, marketing or non-profit management
- Qualified candidates should possess strong writing skills, attention to detail, and have a keen interest in the mission of the American Lung Association
- Ability to multitask, perform in a team environment, and a demonstrated willingness to learn
- Ability to work independently
- Computer Proficiency – Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher
- Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs. (supplies)
- Consistent with its mission, the American Lung Association maintains a smoke-free workplace; all interns and volunteers must abstain from tobacco use in any form, including vaping.
