Professional Writing Tutor

Student Affairs III

Shiprock Campus


Duty Schedule:

Monday- Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm, possibly late hours and weekdays.

Summary/Objective of Position:

The role of the Professional Tutor is to assist writing faculty with instructional materials via tutoring sessions for students. Tutoring students individually or in groups either in-person or on-line, direct students on the use of the computer assisted instruction, assist in the collection of writing resource materials for students use, conduct academic writing workshops, and submit student progress reports to Coordinator and referring personnel. The tutor will also facilitate structured writing sessions and/or writing strategies. Will share best writing practices/techniques with other Professional and peer writing tutors.

TUTORIAL DUTIES:

*Facilitate and guide discussion with students on a one-to-one or group setting on writing assignments without doing the work for the student.

*Assist students by appointment (example, if referred) using Tutor scheduling - ConExEd.

*Apply easy to understand instruction to help students understand writing course content.

*Assist students with on-line courses, such as blackboard and on-line courses.

*Collaborate with Learning Center staff, Student Affairs staff, and faculty to improve tutoring skills.

*Maintain strict confidentiality of all student information, material and discussions shared in the tutoring sessions.

*Assist workshops or outreach activities conducted by Professional Writing Tutor.

COLLABORATION

*Meet with writing instructors to maintain any necessary course syllabus subject materials to implement during tutoring sessions.

*Consult with faculty concerning students' lack of progress and, when appropriate, request suggestions for materials for providing assist to the students.

*Collaborate with referring personnel, i.e. Career Education, Student Support Specialist, Student Mental Health, or Advising, on student progress in tutoring.

REPORTING

*Enter information on tutor platform of students who were tutored.

*Complete tutor reports; tutor logs and tutoring session evaluation, and submit to supervisor at the end of each month.

*Complete time and effort reports and submit to supervisor at the end of each month.

*Keep accurate records of tutoring sessions then submit to supervisor at the end of each week.

*Sign in/ out on Paylogics application for documentation of hours worked.

OTHER RELATED DUTIES AS ASSIGNED BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

*Assist in general operation of the Learning Center.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience


Minimum:

One year tutoring and/or classroom teaching experience and work with adult learners, Associate of Arts degree.

Preferred:

Level I or higher in CRLA - International Tutor Training Program Certification.

One year experience in tutoring English writing.

Bachelor of Arts degree, preferred in English major/minor.

Knowledge

Good interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from various education, cultural, and social backgrounds.

Adhere to the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 which students' identification and records are protected.

Respect confidentiality at all times.

Must be responsible, reliable, and punctual to deliver quality tutorial services with a positive attitude.

Must be familiar with video communication applications, such as Zoom.

Knowledge of effective teachings or tutoring strategies.

Skills:

Skill in the operation of computers an job related software programs.

Skill in decision making and problem solving.

Skill in interpersonal relations.

Skill in working with diverse students population.

Skill in relating instructional materials to students.

Skill in presenting material in an organized manner.

Skill in conducting workshops or presentations.

Abilities:

Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff.

Ability to maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions.

Ability to work with a diverse student population.

Ability to provide academic support to students at all campus sites.

Physical Requirements, Work Environment & Travel:

Physical requirements are no more than what one encounters in a general office setting.

May be required to work flexible hours.

Other Requirement(s):

Valid state issued drivers license is required.
