POSITION DESCRIPTION: SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Education Director (CSM), the Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing direct instruction to children attending CSM locations. The Special Education Teacher is also responsible for the management, development and performance of Teaching Assistants.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university and meet the state certification requirements for Teacher. The Teacher may be conditionally or provisionally certified. To maintain employment as a Teacher, Maryland State certification must be kept current.

Experience: Minimum two (2) years’ experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities in an instructional setting. Previous supervisory experience preferred.

Skills: Must possess strong written and oral communication skills, as well as good organizational and coordinative ability. Must possess and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills with the ability to exercise patience, caring and concern in new and sometimes stressful situations. Computer literacy required, with a proficiency in standard business software applications (i.e., word processing, e-mail and spreadsheets).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Special Education Teacher also functions as the Individual Program Coordinator. The Teacher’s duties are as follows:

• Coordinates implementation of the Individualized Program for each student.

• Ensures implementation of the Individualized Education Program. Train the Teacher Assistants on implementation of the IEP and behavioral programs, ensuring the initiation of goals and behavioral programs on time. Write goals and instructional programs for each student.

• Collects, compiles, and complete monthly progress reports by the 15th of the following Month.

• Confers with the Teacher Assistant and the Residential Instructors to discuss the current status of individual students’ instructional plans. Reviews review students’ education progress and ensures coordination of the instructional plans in the classroom, the community, and the residences.

• Participates in weekly classroom staff meeting to coordinate classroom and community activities schedule, to share relevant information amongst all staff and to train staff in policies procedures, and other school and agency matters.

• Participates in weekly consultations with psychologist to monitor behavioral program implementation.

• Oversees the administration of medication in the classroom and monitor the charting.

• Supervises the safe handling of and ensure that the appropriate quantities of medication are available.

• Maintains classroom data and records; maintain files and records and ensures that Teacher Assistants are completing all necessary forms.

• Develops classroom instructional programs; plans and implements daily classroom schedule.

• Ensures implementation of behavioral program for each student.

• Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary team for each student.

• Completes the educational assessment of students.

• Trains, supervises, and evaluates Teacher Assistants.

• Orders, purchases, or makes instructional materials.

• Adheres to all CSAAC policies and procedures; applicable regulations of federal, state, and local laws; and The Council standards.

• Confers with human resources to affect any disciplinary measures as required.

• Performs other duties as assigned by the Education Director

• Adheres to mandatory use of CareMatic system to access, send email and access and report health information, data and incidents for individuals supported in CSAAC program. Adheres to mandatory use of TLM software for Human Resource and Accounting related duties.

REQUIRED TRAINING/PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATIONS

• Currency of Maryland State teaching certification.

• Medication Administration certification.

• Completion and demonstration of techniques taught in the Behavioral Principles and Strategies.

• Successfully complete annual recertification of the BPS.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

Employee must be able to effectively complete a non-adverse physical intervention with autistic individuals of varying heights, weights and levels of physical strength according to the guidelines presented in Behavioral Principles and Strategies training.
