PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Play Learn Connect early literacy and family engagement program is a weekly family and classroom visiting program that provides families with educational books and toys that connect to the classroom curriculum and continues a child's learning at home. The program is designed to strengthen verbal interaction and educational play between parents and their preschool children enrolled in the assigned classrooms and to engage families in their children’s learning. The philosophy of the program is that the parent is their child’s first teacher.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Play Learn Connect Coordinator is responsible for planning and implementing the various components of a program for the families of 3- and 4-year-old children enrolled in the assigned-funded classrooms. The Coordinator works collaboratively with other members of the Family Center team, as well as staff and administration from schools and community preschool programs to coordinate and schedule program implementation. Depending on caseload and need, the Coordinator may conduct weekly classroom visits and/or family visits at each site. The Coordinator is responsible for selecting and purchasing supplies and materials, engaging families in the program, and training and supervising the Family Engagement Specialist(s). The Coordinator will conduct an evaluation of the effectiveness of the program on an annual basis and complete reports for funding sources and agency.

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The Coordinator of the Play Learn Connect early literacy and family engagement program must have a minimum of two years of relevant experience in an early childhood or parent education program. A Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, social work, or related field is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of child development, particularly for children age 2 to 4 years, and knowledge of literacy-based curriculum required.
  • Knowledge of local childcare programs and community resources most desirable.
  • Ability to supervise and coach staff members required.
  • Must have good organizational skills, communication skills and writing skills.
  • Must be sensitive to the needs of parents and the stressors in their lives, as well as able to interact in a positive, respectful way with many different parents, children, and community members.
  • Must be able to work with families from diverse backgrounds and demonstrate respect for the cultural and ethnic heritage of all families.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the Strengthening Families philosophy.
  • Familiarity with Word, Excel, Google Docs and Sheets is required.
  • Ability to plan classroom and family visits, to coach verbal interactions, and to speak in public required.


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The majority of time is spent on-site in the Family Center office, though the Coordinator may also conduct weekly visits in classroom and/or in-home visits with select families. Family events, visits, and meetings occur in the community. Employees work under typical office conditions, at a desk or workstation, and the noise level is usually quiet. Family visits are completed at parents’ individual homes or in the community at schools or centers. Employees are regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands repeatedly to finger, handle, and operate standard office equipment; reach with both hands and lift up to 30 pounds. Must be able to provide documentation of good physical and mental health, freedom from communicable diseases, and evidence of up-to-date immunizations.

WORK YEAR:

The position is 10-15 hours may vary depending on funding; running with the public school schedule for 35 weeks from September-June


SALARY: $24/hour


This position can be combined with the available Associate Coordinator ParentChild+ Program position: 12-13 hours per week from September-June, with reduced hours in the summer.
