Position Summary

The Taper position with RBA Builders serves an essential function in construction operations through the assistance and completion of various field functions. Tapers repair a variety of commercial, industrial, medical, etc. structures. In general, the RBA Taper works with taping materials, and tools to tape, mud, and finish drywall including hand and power operated tools and equipment. Self-motivated craftsman may also be involved with demolition, and maintenance of structures and fixtures. 

 

Job Duties/ Responsibilities

  • Ability to seals joints between drywall or other wallboards to prepare wall surface for painting: Mixes sealing compound, by hand of with portable electric mixers, and spreads compound over joints between boards, using trowel, broad knife, or spatula.
  • Ability to press paper tape over joint to embed tape into compound and seal joint or tapes joint.
  • Ability to spread and smooth cementing material over tape, using trowel to floating machine to blend joint with wall surface.
  • Ability to sand rough spots after cement has dried.
  • Ability to fill cracks and holes in walls and ceiling with sealing compound.
  •  Ability to install metal molding at concerns in lieu of seal and tape.
  • Ability to apply texture compound to walls and ceiling for final finish, using brushes, rollers, and/or spray guns.
  • Has the ability to apply and finish drywall mud and texture coatings with mechanical spray equipment up to a level 5 finish.
  • Maintains tools and equipment in safe operating condition.
  • Complete safety checklists, and daily reports
  •  Assists Superintendents, foreman, and carpenters, when necessary
  • Prep construction sites by cleaning obstacles, preparing site for construction, set up barricades and many duties to assist in site operations.
  •  Put together and take apart temporary structures, such as scaffolding, barricaded walls, etc.
  • Taking off and ordering materials. 
  • Good communication skills inclusive of reading and writing reports. 
  • The ability to use phone apps to fill out material request forms.


Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 year of general taping/finishing experience and completion of an apprenticeship or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license
    • Forklift certified preferred
    • Asbestos awareness training preferred
    • Ability to read, interpret, and follow blueprints
    • Scaffold training
    • Demonstrated ability to operate hand, air, and power tools
    • Able to lift and move up to 50 pounds regularly


Physical Demands

The job of a Taper requires a qualified individual to climb stairs, ladders, walkways, scaffolding, and other implements in order to access areas under construction to conduct inspections, job walks and monitor work progress in areas including but not limited to roof tops, confined spaces and excavation trenches.

  • The job of a Taper requires a qualified individual to twist approximately 45&degree; in either direction in order to pick up and maneuver tools, in addition to accessing adjacent materials and can perform desk drawers as well as removing project binders and plans from shelving within the jobsite trailer or a vehicle.
  • The job of a Taper requires a qualified individual to be able to repeatedly lift objects up to 50 pounds and either place or remove them from the floor, shelving, or a vehicle varying in height from 0-6 feet in height, without assistance.
  • The Taper position requires frequent operation of handheld power tools and other construction machinery and therefore requires finger and wrist dexterity for extended periods of time for any qualified applicant.
  • The Carpenter position requires a qualified employee to maintain a reliable and predictable attendance record to avoid any service disruptions to project operations.
  • The job of a Taper requires a qualified individual to have effective oral and written communication in the English language, whether in person, on the telephone, or through correspondence which is essential to completing sales calls, client meetings, vendor and subcontractor negotiation and project fulfillment with accuracy.
  • The job of a Taper requires a qualified individual to drive long distances to various jobsites and therefore must be able to sit for long periods of time based on differing traffic and travel distances.
  • The job of a Taper requires a qualified individual to perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by a supervisor.
