Job Description – Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist (MRI) Technologist

Reports to: Rosy Snapp-Director of Medical Imaging
Summary/Objective
MRI technologists operate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners to create diagnostic images which aids in the diagnostics of a patient. MRI procedures are done with or without contrast. As a front-line representative of MIND, employee should strive to act and communicate in such a fashion as to enhance the patient experience.
Work Environment
This job operates in a medical office facility. This role routinely uses standard medical equipment such as MRI machines and office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. The ability to assist patients providing reassurance and reducing anxiety and fear.
Essential Functions
Select appropriate imaging techniques and coils to produce required images. Start IV for infusion patients. MRI with contrast approximately 60% of MRI complete require contrast.
Inspect images for quality, using magnetic resonance scanner equipment and laser camera. Position patients on cradle, attaching immobilization devices as needed to specific area of imaging, to ensure appropriate placement for imaging.
Explain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures to patients, patient representatives, or family members.
Test magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment to ensure proper functioning and performance in accordance with specifications. Supervisor performs these functions with quality assurance.
Since an MRI scanner is essentially a giant high-powered magnet, technologists must adhere to strict safety procedures when working with the scanner and perform routine maintenance to keep it in peak condition.
As part of the testing process, an MRI tech will gather a patient's medical history, explain testing procedures, and prepare the patient for the procedure.
During testing, the MRI technologist monitors the patient's status. After testing is complete, they report their findings to the radiologist for further analysis, remove the IV and safely escort the patient from the immobilization devices.
Wipe down MRI suite equipment used for procedure and prepares suite for next patient.
Sweep and mop the floor on a daily basis as the MRI suite must not be entered without a tech.
Physical Demands
This position requires the ability to assist patient on and off to the scanner table. Employee is not required to lift or provide assistance to the patient. Patient must access the “bed” by either their own physical capabilities or utilizing a wheel chair or walker to assist.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a Contingent position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Required Education and Experience; complete certification, and register on either A.R.M.R.I.T. or A.R.R.T. The requirements for MRI technologists entering the field are a 2-year degree applicable in the field of MRI technology. Maintaining a certification in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is a plus. Must be listed on the MRI Registry either A.R.M.R.I.T. or A.R.R.T. Required to pay annual certification fee, by the employer. Required to obtain 24 credits per 2-year period to maintain certification.
