General Position Summary

The Coordinator of Children’s Ministry is responsible for designing and implementing parish catechesis and activities for Pre-School through Elementary. The Coordinator is responsible for the administration of Sacramental Preparation for First Holy Communion and First Reconciliation.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Selects, develops, communicates and evaluates the parish Religious Education programs of children from Pre-School through Elementary (K-6th grade), including Children’s Liturgy of the Word. Coordinate with Director of Adult Ministry for the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program. Be a resource for families, seeking to root families in the Church. Obtains Supervisor’s (and consequently the Pastor’s) approval and support for the Parish Children’s Catechetical plan. Works in tandem with the rest of the Formation Team to create a clear path for discipleship for families.
  • Administers the children’s First Reconciliation/First Eucharist Preparation programs, including those children with disabilities, in parish formation, and in Catholic schools. Organizes and/or presents an adult program that coincides with the children’s formation. Reviews and complies with all catechetical and sacramental guidelines set forth by the pastor and the Diocesan Bishop (communicated through the Diocesan Department of Evangelization and Catechesis).
  • Provides a parish wide Vacation Bible School Program, and ensures that all Diocesan protocols are met.
  • Organizes special activities and events that invite and encourage participation in the life of the church.
  • Coordinates, recruits, screens, motivates and equips volunteer leaders through a comprehensive formation process in the areas of evangelization and catechesis.
    1. Encourages all catechists to life-long formation by promoting approved Diocesan Catechist Formation courses.
  • Effectively provides a strong system of communication to the families, parish, and community regarding activities and events, using Parish tools (Bulletin, Facebook, Flocknote, website, eBlast, newsletter, etc)
  • Purchases and maintains supplies and materials necessary for a successful program.
  • Represents the needs of the children and their families to the pastor, the staff and the community.
  • Develops and maintains records and database(s) for department and sacramental recordkeeping.
  • Attends staff meetings and Diocesan meetings/trainings as required.
  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Pastor and supervisor.

Typical Decisions and/or Recommendations Made in This Position:

  • Participates in the budget process to ensure the goals of the program are in line with the budget.
  • Day-to-day management and decision for budgeted funds available to the financial requests received.
  • Recommend plans and future direction to meet the needs of the department programs.

Supervision Given and/or Received:

  • Supervised by the Director of Adult Formation.
  • Work with the Director and the Business Manager on the financial process and budget.

Internal Contacts:

  • Will work with supervisor to discuss needs of the programs under his/her day-to-day leadership.
  • Works in tandem with the rest of formation department to create a clear path of discipleship.
  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with staff and parish ministry leaders.

External Contacts:

  • Develops and maintains working relationships with schools, other Diocesan Children’s Formation departments and the Diocesan Formation Office.

Working Conditions and/or Physical Requirements:

  • This position works in a typical office environment, on stage in front of children and families.
  • Is subject to stress due to the evolving and quickly expanding programs and dynamics of family needs, tight deadlines and heavy workloads.

Travel Requirements:

  • Limited, 1-3 times per year

Education and Experience Preferred:

  • Practicing Catholic, faithful to the Magisterium and in good standing with the Catholic Church.
  • Successful completion of the Diocesan Safe Environment process.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Theology, Religious Studies or Youth Ministry; Master’s Degree preferred
  • Certified in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Knowledge and Skills Preferred:

  • Skilled at Public speaking
  • Skilled at strategic planning
  • Intermediate proficiency with Excel, Word, Publisher
  • Licensing and Copyright awareness

FLSA Designation: Exempt
