Job Title: Youth Development Worker

Department: Behavioral Health & Wellness Services

Supervisor: Senior Program Manager at School Centers for Wellness

Classification: Full-time This is a non-Exempt/Hourly position

Synopsis: The youth Development worker (YDW) will develop and maintain relationships with youth, families, and partner site staff, including teachers and school administrators. The YDW plays a pivotal role in shaping the lives of Latino youth, assisting them as they develop appropriate coping skills for their adjustment to the school environment. The YDW maintains healthy and appropriate relationships with youth and their families.

Note: This position is funded by a grant from the Maryland Consortium on Coordinated Community Supports or the Strategic Initiative Offices at Prince George’s County Public Schools. Employment continuation depends on the grant's renewal.

Qualifications: Required Education and Experience:

  1. Associate degree or equivalent experience
  2. Two years of experience working with youth and immigrant families
  3. Case management experience with vulnerable populations
  4. Knowledge of Latino immigrant and immigrant community and ability to work with all segments of the community
  5. Ability to build and maintain network systems within and outside of the school setting

Required Skills/Abilities/Certifications/Licenses:

  1. Knowledge of the Latine immigrant community in PGCPS and ability to work with all community segments.
  2. Fluently bilingual (Spanish & English)
  3. Valid driver license
  4. Ability to be in person in and outside of a school setting.
  5. High motivation to work in the school-mental Health field. Ability to work evenings and weekends
  6. Strong ethical core.
  7. Detail-oriented, self-starter, highly organized
  8. Strong positive aptitude to work independently and as part of a team
  9. Leadership, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  10. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, proficient in Excel, database management, data entry, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • An associate's or bachelor's degree in human services and/or a bachelor's degree in human services are preferred.
  • Experience working in school settings
  • Experience working with schools, students, and families
  • Experience working in areas of school-based, mental health, and substance abuse.
  • Experience working with Limited English Proficient Latinos at risk for and/or the LGBTQ community.
  • Knowledge of positive parent engagement curriculums.
  • Ability to work with electronic medical records (EMR), BH Works, and other database management and software.
  • Knowledge and understanding of patient/participant confidentiality issues, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), and FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) compliance regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Be responsible for developing and delivering college career preparedness for all program participants.
  • Maintain a caseload in compliance with contract terms and agency expectations as defined by the senior program manager.
  • Facilitate, as needed, two-way communication between students, families, and school staff.
  • Acts as a client advocate in school, community, and government agencies.
  • Collaborate with the community school coordinator, therapist, school staff, and community partners to provide comprehensive care to students and their families.
  • Serve as a liaison and maintain a strong relationship with school administration, school nurses, teachers, and other school-related staff.
  • Uses strategies to engage families to build trust and rapport with families.
  • Organizes, coordinates, and facilitates a wide variety of meetings, workshops, presentations, group interventions, activities, and events for parents, students, and school staff to develop partnerships between families and schools.
  • Conducts program enrollment intake and initial assessment interviews with new or readmitted clients
  • Be responsible for the implementation of each Youth's Individual Treatment Plan.
  • Provide in-person, email, or telephone services.
  • Provide intensive case management services to youth and their families/guardians.
  • Engage with youth in daily academic and pro-social routines and activities.
  • Develop and support creative interventions for the youth and their families.
  • Provide guidance and role modeling for the youth in the milieu.
  • Facilitate large and small psychoeducational groups (individually or with co-facilitator).
  • Collaborate with school administration and staff on the needs of students, families, and the school community.
  • Strong sense of collaboration among colleagues and community partners in and out of the school setting.
  • Serve as a liaison between LCDP and program stakeholders for any school-based mental health initiative.
  • Responsible for organizing and attending parents and community meetings and activities.
  • Integrate into and engage with school culture by developing positive relationships with the school community.
  • Accountable for implementing Individual Care Plans and documenting client interactions within 48 hours (about two days).
  • Support students and families in crisis.
  • Collaborates with the training of new Youth Development Workers and Social Work interns.
  • Participate in supervision meetings, monthly staff meetings, and all mandatory LCDP activities.
  • Availability to work during evenings and weekends when needed.
  • Participates in and supports ongoing planning & continuous quality improvement sessions • Other duties as assigned

  • None

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift to 30 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to work outside and stand up for a prolonged period during outreach events.
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings as needed.
  • Able to perform duties in different La Clinica locations as required.
