Department: Recreation                Reports to: Swim Lesson Coordinator                  Seasonal: Non-exempt


Position Description

The Swim Lesson Instructor performs duties under the direct supervision of the Swim Lesson Coordinator, with overall direction from the Aquatics Manager. General responsibilities include, but are not limited to helping patrons become comfortable in the water, effectively teaching the basic techniques of swimming and reinforcing water safety skills. Duties are performed in accordance with a prescribed program and established procedures with some opportunities to exercise independent judgment. This is an at-will position.


Essential Responsibilities

  • Provides competent, safe instruction using recognized lead-up skills established by aquatic agencies and the Park District.
  • Knows how to use course materials effectively.
  • Adapts teaching approaches to the age, experience, and ability of participants so they can meet course objectives.
  • Provides for the health and safety of participants, including ensuring that all teaching and practice areas are free of hazards and that materials and equipment are safe.
  • Covers all materials required in a level.
  • Communicates regularly with participants and their parents, as appropriate, to ensure they are aware of progress.
  • Recognizes and responds effectively in emergencies in accordance with district emergency action plans.
  • Enforces all aquatic facility policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Completes records and reports.
  • Participates in regular in-service training sessions.
  • Complies with all safety and loss prevention policies.
    • Inform supervisor of any unsafe conditions or hazardous work procedures.
    • Correct any unsafe conditions, if possible, and instruct co-workers on safety procedures.
  • Completes all additional duties as prescribed by management.
  • Assists other Park District employees when needed.
  • Supports DTPD’s Mission Statement, by providing excellent service to the community.


Cognitive Considerations

  • Employee must be able to follow directions and communicate in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Employee must have the ability to read and understand materials printed in English.
  • Employee must possess good problem solving skills and have the capacity to act rationally and calmly in high stress and/or emergency situations.
  • Must have the ability to develop and maintain positive and effective working relationship with subordinates and to promote and maintain high moral and enthusiasm.
  • Employee represents the Dundee Township Park District in a professional manner.

Safety & Risk Management

  • Maintains a working knowledge of all general and departmental-specific safety rules.
  • Uses material handling equipment or staff assistance when lifting and/or moving objects 50 pounds or heavier.
  • Reports any work-related injuries to supervisor promptly.
  • Immediately reports all accidents and unsafe conditions to the supervisor.
  • Attends all required safety program and in-service education meetings.
  • Corrects unsafe conditions, if possible, alerts co-workers to potential unsafe conditions and/or reports them to supervisor.
  • Instructs co-workers, when necessary, on safety procedures or precautions.
  • Treats public complaints and concerns with the utmost attention. Is courteous in all cases.
  • Pays strict attention to housekeeping of work area(s) and general facility.


Qualifications

  • Must be at least 15 years old.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Good physical condition, sufficient strength, and mobility required.
  • Reading, writing, speaking and understanding English language.
  • Possess good problem solving skills and has capacity to act rationally and calmly in high stress and/or emergency situations.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule including some nights and weekends as required.
  • Ability to pay meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to execute the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Enthusiastic and positive attitude towards swimming.
  • The ability to encourage people and put them at ease.


Hours Standards

  • The Swim Instructor position may be a year round position.
  • It may include both evening and weekend hours, however, a set schedule may be available.
