Kiernan Center Summer Camp Counselors

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, the KC summer camp counselors are responsible for the planning, organization, health and safety and supervision of daily activities for a group of campers

Essential Duties:
  • Pre-plan and implement daily activities;
  • Supervise all campers assigned to counselors group during all activities including movement around the building; (ex. gym to pool)
  • Each counselor will be required to create, organize and implement one camp wide group activity;
  • Develop and prepare materials and equipment needed on a daily and weekly basis;
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures outlined in the Camp Handbook and follow all directions issued by Camp Director;
  • Inspect all facilities and equipment to ensure it's safety;
  • Assist the Director with the preparation and maintenance of attendance records, inventories, and preparation of reports;
  • Perform other related duties as required;
  • Assisting in organizing and leading a variety of activities including but not limited to: Arts & Crafts, team sport games, demonstrations, drama, special events, and camp tournaments
General Description:% of Time

95% Supervising campers during daily activities;

5% Assisting in the planning and implementation of activities.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Ability to read and comprehend the English language sufficiently to be able to read and understand various forms, documentation, files and information in the department;
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, written and oral communication skills;
  • Sufficient manual dexterity with proficiency to handle various office machines including but not limited to: calculator, copy machine, computer, and typewriter;
  • Ability to receive telephone calls, respond to inquiries and communicate with others by telephone with or without reasonable accommodations;
  • Experience with and knowledge of youth programs in a summer camp setting;
  • Basic mathematical skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to be able to verify accuracy of record keeping and athletics information;
  • Basic knowledge and ability to implement rules to basic recreation activities and games
Ergonomic Requirements:

The functions of the position is usually performed standing, but may require some amount of time sitting. Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, lifting, walking, running, carrying and other movements may be required. Tasks will involve instruction in some fitness activities involving running, walking, and wrist and hand movements. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without significant risk of injury to themselves or others, or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how they can perform the essential functions listed above.

Qualification Standards:
  • Counselors must be at least 16 years of age
  • Experience supervising children or completion of a training course is required.
  • Police background checks are required.
  • Character references are required
