OVERVIEW

Develops, implements, coordinates, and monitors individual treatment and service plans, provides support, therapy and advocacy for individuals having serious and persistent substance use disorders. Work is performed under general supervision and is guided by agency policies and procedures, quality assurance, public and private payor guidelines, diagnostic guidelines and professional practices and including ethical standards related to client interactions, state and federal licensure and accreditation regulations and guidelines.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Conducts intake interviews, documents assessments and develops diag­nosis and treatment plans.
  2. Provides problem solving, psycho-education, and supportive therapy to individuals and families through individual, family and group sessions.
  3. Provides individuals with referrals to community resources.
  4. Coordinates individual entry, discharge and aftercare relating to detoxification, residential substance abuse treatment programs, and transitional housing.
  5. Provides crisis intervention services and risk assessments.
  6. Inputs psychological data to agency staff for individual placements, care and treatment.
  7. Consults and coordinates with agency treatment staff and representatives of other agencies or programs; makes referrals, and provides and coordinates individual case management services.
  8. Conducts group, individual and family therapy sessions including substance use group therapy.
  9. Prepares lesson plan and training materials for education­al/treatment programming.
  10. Prepares and maintains case documentation including treatment plans, progress notes and periodic assessments.
  11. Provides expert testimony in court and legal proceedings.
  12. Refers individuals to inpatient treatment providers and assists newly discharged individuals.
  13. Attends in-service training and staff development programs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of social casework principles, practices and techniques, as well as thorough knowledge of diagnosis as it relates to the DSM-5. Thorough knowledge of treatment modalities and interventions as they relate to individual, group and family therapy, counseling practices and techniques applicable to the substance use/chemically dependent and mental health population; considerable knowledge of the principles and manifestations of substance use disorders on family, group dynamics, parenting and child development; considerable knowledge of clinical documentation and office practices. Thorough knowledge of public and private resources, court services, substance abuse programs and service delivery systems in the local community and the eligibility criteria, intake processes, termination criteria and procedures; ability to conduct effective interviews, observe, assess and record individual behaviors and functioning and develop treatment and service plans; ability to identify needs and link individuals with appropriate services; ability to establish and maintain rapport with the individual population; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with agency and facility staff and of other private and public facilities, agencies and organizations; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to operate a vehicle; ability to function calmly in stressful situa­tions; ability to prepare and maintain detailed records and prepare related reports; ability to collect, compile and evaluate electronically sourced or other data and prepare reports; ability to provide testimony in both oral and written formats; ability to operate a vehicle; ability to remain calm in stressful situations; ability to persistently negotiate with individuals and service providers.

TYPICAL EDUCATION, TRAINING AND WORK EXPERIENCE

Master's Degree in the Behavioral Sciences and some clini­cal work experience in the treatment of the mentally ill or substance abusing populations.

LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATIONS

Valid VA driver's license. Licensed eligible as LCSW, LPC, or LCP in Virginia
