Position Summary: Responsible for covering Stamford Hospital draw station locations between operation hours of 7am - 8pm with occasional Saturday, Sunday and Holiday duty. Obtains blood specimens by venipuncture or heel stick and collects non-blood specimens such as urine for laboratory testing from all age groups. Verify the test requisitions, data input and generate computer labels correctly and accurately before preparing specimens for transport to laboratory.

Essential Functions:

  • Obtain blood specimens from patients per laboratory orders by performing venipunctures and heel sticks.
  • Obtain and handle other types of specimens including urine, stool, sputum, etc.
  • Communicate with and always assist patients in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Identify the patient and access the correct patient record by using at least 2 forms of identification while observing HIPPA requirements.
  • Registration of or update patient demographics using ADM module, order tests using correct mnemonics in an accurate and timely manner
  • Complete input of lab requisition forms and produce appropriate labels, prepare specimens for transport by following specific handling requirements
  • Order and maintain adequate laboratory supplies including checking for expired supplies
  • Daily cleaning of draw station including record keeping and equipment maintenance
  • Follow policies, SOP (standard operating procedure), regulatory guidelines, and safety guidelines
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Competencies: Knowledge of basic medical laboratory principles, standards, applications and tests.
  • Knowledge of and ability to access medical laboratory safety, cleanliness and infection control policies and regulations.
  • Knowledge of medical laboratory equipment uses and maintenance.
  • Accuracy - Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
  • Communication - Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

  • Computer Skills - Proficient ability to use computer and programs related to patient information and specimen entry
  • Confidentiality - Maintain patient, team member and employer confidentiality. Comply with all HIPAA regulations.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum 1-3 years phlebotomy experience required
  • Phlebotomy Certification required
