Job Summary:

The RN Coordinator Medical Imaging Position reports directly to Director of Diagnostic Services
Key responsibilities of the role include: Responsibility for the coordination of the day to day functions and activities of an imaging department. The RN Coordinator will facilitate the management of clinical and personnel activities of the unit, serving as a resource/support to the staff, physicians, patients, families, and other departments. He/she will be involved in direct patient care approximately of work time. He/she is responsible for performing a wide variety of clinical procedures requiring independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative in the utilization of the equipment for the diagnosis and/or treatment of diseases. The RN coordinator is responsible for implementing the nursing process based on expanded knowledge and experience. The nurse is responsible for providing patient care with an understanding and awareness of age specific needs. Addresses the biological, emotional, developmental, psychosocial, and patient/family education needs in providing care to the patient and family. The RN Coordinator can independently perform job functions. The RN Coordinator is responsible for regulatory compliance and readiness.
Impact of this role in the organization is to promote the continuum of care while patients are in the Medical Imaging Department.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

Patient Care/Safety and Quality

  • Completes chart audits for imaging procedures requiring time outs.
  • Develops and maintains tracking mechanism for patient safety concerns (reactions, extravasations, etc.)
  • Develops and maintains tracking mechanism for No Show patients.
  • Effectively navigates technical programs and is a resource for others Epic, SuccessFactors, SmartSquare, etc.
  • Assists with maintenance of the department records, JC standards, State and Federal regulations, Safety Absolutes and Performance Improvement.
  • The nurse is responsible for delivering patient care in complex, multiple problem patient care situations.
  • Recognizes that total patient care starts when the patient arrives to our facility and ends when the physician/patient have the imaging results.
  • Introduces self to patient and/or guardian upon entering rooms utilizing proper scripting.
  • Verifies patient identification using (2) identifiers i.e.; armband, DOB, verbalize identification, etc.
  • Performs crash carts and anaphylactic box checks (syringes, needles available in each area).
  • Available for emergency situations and completes incident reports.
  • Prepare and administer contrast if needed. Understands preparation/administration of doses according to patients weight and physician order.
  • Distributes oral contrast to OPs
  • Assist with order collection and patient preparation for CT and any other area as needed.
  • Administers relaxation medications as needed.
  • Administers conscious sedation per system wide policy and procedure.
  • Demonstrates IV administration competence and maintenance.
  • Accesses patient ports when needed.
  • Serves as educator/evaluator for IV competence.
  • Prepares trays and catheters for procedure.
  • Preps the patient for the procedure.
  • Understands and demonstrates sterile technique.
  • Provides medication administration oversight.
  • Assists and Monitors patients while in imaging (MR cardiac monitoring, lead removal, etc.)
  • Completes necessary paperwork and computer documentation.
  • Understands, Demonstrates and Communicates pre and post procedural care.
  • Understands and complies with verbal order RBAC and performs necessary follow-up with written order.
  • Understands Scope of Service for the Medical Imaging Department.
  • Documents patient care legibly, accurately, and appropriately.
  • Uses and understands preprocedural verification/time out documentation.
  • Reviews the case with appropriate physician(s), as needed.
  • Performs and coordinates QA/QC functions, as needed.
  • Strives to support the WellStar Mission, Vision and Credo.
  • Adheres to the Imaging Behavior Standards.
Customer Focus/Communication
  • Meets Customer Service and Service Recovery Expectations as needed.
  • Assists in following up with patients regarding OP customer service scores/concerns.
  • Provides physician follow-up regarding No show patients and rescheduled appt date.
  • Schedules patients for exams.
  • Verifies written orders.
  • Makes appt reminder calls, delivering appropriate instructions and verifying orders/prep.
  • Calls No Show patients for reschedule.
  • Provides privacy and comfort for patients/customers.
  • Answers phone in the department utilizing proper scripting.
  • In addition to patient care delivery, the nurse is responsible for patient, family/support system education, and coordination of activities, staff development, and professional and self-developmental activities.
Coordinates Department Workflow
  • Supervise employees, as needed, ensuring policy compliance.
  • Prepares and delivers performance evaluations.
  • Investigates root cause and facilitates resolution for patient safety issues.
  • Serves as a liaison between nursing and imaging-communicating new initiatives, policies, concerns, etc.
  • Lead and or participates in system Medical Imaging Nursing Council as directed.
  • Serves on facility/system nursing committees Shared Governance and Operative/Invasive.
  • Participates in management/administrative committee activities (WARP, Etc.)
  • Conducts staff meetings, in-services and training (IV, INT, stroke education, EPIC documentation, etc.).
  • Supports operational budget issues and goals orders supplies as requested
  • Responsible for development of staffing schedule based upon departmental needs.
  • Completes time/attendance using SmartSquare/Kronos as appropriate.
  • Covers for PTO where needed
  • Maintains a high level of visibility and communication throughout the imaging department
  • Interprets, supports, and implements system and departmental initiatives.
  • Assumes responsibility for other duties as assigned.
  • Assists in development of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knows the existing lines of communication and authority, handles communications properly and is dependable, cooperative and emotionally stable.
Actively participates in a Team Center Approach
  • Assists in in-service /training for other Medical Imaging staff.
  • Serves as second person in meeting Workplace Safety policy as needed.
  • Must be flexible with work hours to meet department needs.
  • Able to work scheduled hours.
  • Transports patients, as needed.
  • Assist in other Medical Imaging areas and as needed in other departments in the system, site specific (DIC, PET, ARU, etc.).
Performs other duties as assigned
Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.


Required Minimum Education:

Graduate of an accredited/approved School of Nursing and holds a current license in the State of Georgia. Required and
Bachelor's Degree BSN Preferred


Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):

All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
Reg Nurse (Single State) or RN - Multi-state Compact
Advanced Cardiac Life Support or ACLS - Instructor or ACLS - Provisional
Basic Life Support or BLS - Instructor


Additional License(s) and Certification(s):


Required Minimum Experience:

Minimum 1 year nursing experience Required and
Minimum 1 year radiology Preferred and
Computer/data entry experience. Required and
Epic and 3M experience Preferred


Required Minimum Skills:

Ability to communicate with various members of the healthcare team.
Ability to use EXCEL, Word and have basic computer operational knowledge.
