This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
Qualifications DentistBasic Requirements:
• A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry
• The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
• Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant
• ~AND~ Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients
• ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
• Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure
• Grade Determinations: The grade to which an applicant is appointed will be determined by the individual's qualifications and assignment
• Under the Title 38 "rank-in-person" system, candidates are to be appointed at the highest grade or level within the grade for which they are fully qualified up to the full performance level
• For positions above the full performance (journey level) the complexity of the assignment and scope of responsibility are considered in determining grades

The General Dentist dental officer shall be proficient in all aspects of general dentistry including the ability to perform selected specialty services in Inpatient and outpatient settings.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Dentist include, but are not limited to: Evaluations, prophylaxis, radiographs, dental health education, fluoride treatments, sealants, composite and amalgam restorations, crowns, extractions, some endodontic and simple periodontal procedures.
Staff dentist will provide clinical guidance including patient treatment, four-handed dentistry, infection control, OSHA guidelines, x-rays and oral health education, knowledge and application of HIPPA/security regulations, and in compliance with VHA policy.
Meets with patients to discuss and treat dental concerns, performs regular cleanings and other preventative procedures, and establishes a plan for better dental hygiene Performs dental procedures, such as extractions, root canals, and fills cavities Corrects bite issues and overcrowding Applies helpful agents to teeth, such as sealants or whiteners Prescribes medications for dental problems, such as pain medications or antibiotics Gives clients sedatives or anesthesia prior to administering treatments Orders diagnostic measures, such as x-rays, models, etc.
Uses tools, such as drills, probes, brushes, or mirrors, to examine and treat teeth and mouth Keeps records relating to the oral health of patients and the treatments given to them Manages and communicates with other staff members to provide care to patients Adherence to applicable VHA, VISN, Medical Center, and Dental Service Handbooks, Directives, Policies, and Procedures as directed Follows established performance metrics as indicated by Dental leadership to ensure quality is inherent in clinical practice and timeliness of care Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm Compressed/Flexible: Available Telework: Not available EDRP Authorized: This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program.
