This position will provide safe, efficient, cost-effective anesthesia care. The Anesthesia Technician will provide support for routine and complex medical procedures by assisting in the preparation and maintenance of patient monitoring devices and anesthesia delivery systems before and during anesthesia. This position assists the anesthesiologist/anesthetist by operating and maintaining complex equipment needed in major and cardiac procedures.

 

Position Reports To: Clinical Manager


Essential Functions

  1. Supports anesthesia care providers during invasive monitoring, vascular procedures, and regional anesthesia techniques as follows:
    • Supplies and equipment are assembled as appropriate for procedures.
    • Supplies and equipment are procured during procedure as needed.
    • Removes and disposes of all supplies and equipment following procedures performed by anesthesia providers.
  2. Assists with patient transport to Recovery/ICU including preparation of oxygen source and transport monitors.
  3. Supports anesthesia care providers in the operating room environment as follows:
    • Disassembles, decontaminates, and prepares anesthetic and monitoring equipment and accessories including ventilator components, gas analyzers, rapid infusion devices, ET tubes, nasal airways, suction catheters, stethoscopes, face masks, breathing circuits and anesthesia bags using Standard Precautions and applying infection control principles in a correct and consistent manner.
    • Maintains department equipment by evaluating performance and inspecting for defects. Troubleshoots anesthesia equipment malfunctions, routing non-functioning equipment to the proper department for repair.
    • Differentiates between and anticipates the types of supplies and equipment needed for patient population-specific airway management.
    • Differentiates between and anticipates supplies needed for age-patient population-specific general, regional and monitored anesthesia care.
    • Assists with patient laboratory tests and results.
    • Provide assistance to care provider with the identification and check-out blood products.
    • Works autonomously but also willing and able to take direction.
    • Works efficiently and effectively under pressure in a stressful environment.
    • Prioritizes and responds appropriately to actual and/or potential life threatening situations.
    • Maintains adequate par levels of supplies and medications and maintains anesthesia specialty equipment, i.e., Difficult Airway cart, Level one/Belmont, Glidescopes, etc.
    • Coordinates with department head and/or department manager to maintain and/or revise inventory par levels for all supplies and equipment.
    • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with other members of the health care team.
    • Attends staff meetings and inservices to maintain working knowledge of department.
    • Completes hospital annual competency checklist which may include Autotransfusion; Stat lab; ACT; Waste Gas Survey; laser safety; Bronchoscope cleaning and sterilization and transfusion administration. Completes EKG course and monitors EKG for dysrhythmias.
    • Regularly reviews unit-specific materials.
    • Actively participates in educating staff regarding new physiological equipment, procedures and supplies.
    • Assist with arterial line, CVP, and PA catheter placement. Sets up necessary procedure tables with aseptic technique. Sets up, calibrates and verifies function of anesthesia machines, invasive/non-invasive blood pressure monitors, and ETCO2 and SPO2 and is familiar with the ASA Difficult Airway Algorithm.
    • Assists with airway management; ensures rapid sequence/cricoid pressure, fiber optic/Glidescope equipment is ready for use.
    • Performs ACT analysis, intra-aortic balloon(IAB) pump methods, and glucose tests and is responsible for the proper function and maintenance of the machines involved in these procedures.
    • Familiar with various cardiac rhythms and has a working knowledge of hemodynamics and can perform cardiac calculations.
    • Identify and set up pre-mixed pharmaceutical solutions and infusion pumps.
  4. Respond quickly and appropriately to inquiries and requests.
  5. Display an unhurried and caring manner with visitors, families, and co-workers when performing duties.
  6. Demonstrate a pleasing disposition and sensitivity to visitors', families, and co-workers' needs.
  7. Below or at the accepted standard for unscheduled absences as outlined in HR8651.370.

Position Requirements

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of the CWH Operating Room Anesthesia Tech training program with the first 90 days of the position.
  • Washington State MA-R certification acquired with 90 days of employment.
  • ACLS/PALS required within 6 months of hire.

Desired:

  • Graduate of an accredited program i.e. EMT, Paramedic, RT, Phlebotomy or Anesthesiology Technology program.
  • Candidates with current ASATT certification also encouraged.
  • EMT, RT, Paramedic, MA-C, MA-P, LPN or prior HCA licensing.
  • Anesthesia Tech certification through ASATT.
  • Strong preference will be given to candidates with at least one year of experience working in a similar capacity in an Anesthesia Department in a tertiary healthcare facility.

Working Conditions:

  • This position requires demonstrated knowledge and experience in all of the following: care of anatomical functions and components of anesthesia medicines; experience with the correct procedural control of biological hazards, infection control and universal precautions; adherence to ethical and legal responsibilities; knowledge of safe handling and storage of bulk and cylinder gases which pose a fire, electrical and/or explosion hazard in the operating room; the purpose, use and care of equipment used for monitoring anesthesia administration and the maintenance of the patient's airway; knowledge of proper sterilization and aseptic techniques; proper usage of common anesthetic agents and drugs; principles of purchasing and supply level control; human anatomy and physiology and basic pathophysiology of common disease; autotransfusion methods and operation; fluid therapy and intravenous lines; ECG application and interpretation; ACT analysis, blood gas and glucose sampling, including machine operation; pacemaker and defibrillator operations; and basic transesophageal echocardiography use, care and operation.
