Position: Sr Registered Nurse (RN) Specialty (BERT)
Dept: Psychiatry Consulting Services
Shift: FT Days or FT Nights; including rotating weekends
Primary Purpose:
A Registered Nurse (RN) with 2+ years’ experience for the Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT). The Sr RN Specialty is a licensed professional who uses the Parkland nursing professional practice model to coordinate patient care delivery, that focuses on a particular patient population(s)/specific health condition, by the health care team.
The BERT Team de-escalates any perceived or impending behavioral crisis at Parkland Health via calls and/or in-person. As a team member, you'll need to respond swiftly to unexpected situations, quickly assess the situation, gather relevant information, identify interventions, and implement them alongside the bedside staff. Your strengths in building rapport, communicating clearly, and maintaining a big-picture perspective will be invaluable.

Job Summary:
- Responds to patient’s worsening condition, as needed, by assessing the patient, performing interventions, and communicating with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure appropriate patient care.
- Provides care for assigned patient population in accordance with the current State of Texas Nurse Practice Act, established protocols, multidisciplinary plan of care, and clinical area specific standards.
- Provides continuous assessment, consults with other team members as required and provides nursing care which demonstrates patient centered/patient valued care.
- Exercises independent judgment in providing nursing care.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, families, and hospital staff in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- May be required to communicate effectively, via the overhead paging system.
- Must be able to demonstrate the ability to provide direction to non-nursing staff, serve as a preceptor, and serve on rotation as a Charge Nurse.
- Must be able to prepare and conduct in-service educational programs.
- Must be able to demonstrate patient centered/patient valued behaviors.
- Must be able to facilitate biopsychosocial education groups that might include medication and/or health education.
- As applicable, will be required to demonstrate acceptable knowledge of nursing standards of care for specialty care area.
Minimum Qualifications:
- ASN or BSN Degree from an accredited Professional School of Nursing.
- Current/Valid State of TX RN license or temporary license; or valid Compact RN license in good standing without any past/current stipulations.
- Two (2) years direct, consistent RN experience within a Psychiatry Services hospital setting in the past 2 years. RN Floating work experience isn't applicable.
- Thorough knowledge of medical diagnosis that present with behavioral disturbances.
- Above average knowledge and skills in de-escalation techniques.
- Comfortable with adversity, with the ability to provide empathetic care to all clients.
Certification/Registration/Licensure:
*Please note, all required certifications must be more than 30 days from expiration from start date.
- Current/Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) healthcare provider certification card at time of hire and the ability to maintain thereafter from one of the following: American Heart Association; American Red Cross Rescuer; or Military Training Network.
- Must have Satori Alternatives for Managing Aggression (SAMA) certification, level 1-4, within 30 days of hire.
