The Blood Bank Lead CLS is responsible for the daily operations of the transfusion service, including review of records and oversight of equipment maintenance. Individual is responsible for the validation, development and/or implementation of new procedure, policies, equipment and software updates in the blood bank. The BB Lead maintains the lab registrations with ICBBA and FDA, and participates in renewal process of laboratory Biologics license. The BB Lead CLS is also responsible for training and competency of all lab staff assigned to work in the department. BB Lead CLS completes the monthly and quarterly QA/QC reports and completes BPD reports.

Job Description:

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES

Produces accurate laboratory test results following established procedures and within designated turnaround time period . Notifies supervisor of exceptional results . Organizes pending work appropriately for follow-up.

Acquires and maintains blood bank knowledge to provide quality service to laboratory clients.

Ensures all polices and procedures are in compliance with CAP, AABB, FDA an other regulatory requirements. Assures the blood bank is at ready status for unannounced inspections at all times.

Interacts with physicians and medical staff to support their needs for prompt and efficient patient care.

Performs review of all department logs, worksheets QC and temperature records. Coordinates semi-annual method comparisons. Oversees equipment maintenance and calibrations performed by BB Staff, Biomed, Engineering and outside vendors.

Reviews antibody identification panels and follow up on incomplete and sent out workouts. Reviews or coordinates review of blood bank invoices. Bills and/or credits patients for work performed in both SQ and EPIC as appropriate.

Follows up on blood product market withdrawals or recalls. Notifies risk of any recalls that require look back notification.

Documents and follows up on all procedural, QC and SOP deviations. Reports all BPDs to CBER.

Prepare monthly, quarterly and ad hoc QA /miscellaneous reports. Provides data/reports for quarterly transfusion committee meeting.

Develops, performs and coordinates blood bank audits. Submits reports to lab management team and/or medical director.

Develops, revises and implements blood bank SOPs

Develops training plans and trains/coordinates trainingfor new and incumbent blood bank staff. Assures all employees are properly trained in department before working independently. Identifies needs and assures that all employees in the department receive in-service, re-training and education as needed. Provides support and technical consultation to staff as needed. Acts as technical resource to the blood bank and ABSMC staff.

Troubleshoots, follows up and resolves all equipment, reagent, QC, blood product and procedural problems. Leads/coaches other blood bank staff in troubleshooting as necessary. Keeps lab management up to date on all problems and resolutions.

Develops and/or implements validation plans for new equipment, reagents. software revisions, IT changes, blood bank projects or lab processes.

Maintains blood bank licenses and registrations with ICBBA, FDA and CA biologics.

Oversees compliance for blood irradiator regulations per 10 CFR Part 37. Assures that new staff are properly background checked by NRC and HR. Performs initial training for new staff and annual retraining for incumbent staff

Develops, evaluates and oversees 6 month and annual competencies for staff trained in the blood bank.

Maintains supply and reagent inventories and ensures effective utilization. Reports any problems with reagents or supplies to lab management team and vendors. Maintains department in an organized manner.

Oversees blood product inventory to ensure cost effective utilization and to minimize blood wastage. Sets blood product inventory levels in conjunction with lab management, Medical Director and blood supplier. Follows up on all issues related blood products.

Participates I long term planning for lab/blood bank operations. Supports the organization's effort to improve patient satisfaction.

Works closely with other Lead CLSs and lab management to maintain smooth operation of the laboratory. Supports the organization's effort to enhance employee's experience of work.

Acts as role mode to staff. Adheres to all laboratory and ABSMC polices and procedures.

Participates in Transfusion Services Workgroup and other meetings as assigned.

Acts independently with minimal supervision.

Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION
Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.

Bachelor's: Degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university, and one year of training or equivalent combination of education and experience meeting state requirements.

CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE

CLSL-Licensed Clinical Lab Scientist

BB or SBB Certification

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AS TYPICALLY ACQUIRED IN:

Minimum 5 years working experience in a transfusion service as licensed CLS

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

In depth knowledge of requirements of CAP, ABBB, FDA and other accrediting agencies and current transfusion medicine recommendations.

In depth knowledge of the operations and QC/QA requirements of the blood bank.

Minimum of 2 years experience in reviewing antibody identification workups and managing blood component inventory.

Demonstrates the ability to plan, coordinate, organize, direct and evaluate the operations of the blood bank.

Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, physicians and other medical center staff.

Skill in the recognition and analysis of problems in laboratory test performance.

Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with coworkers and others, including medical center staff, vendors, etc.

Ability to act as role model for other staff. Adheres to all laboratory and medical center policies and procedures.

Prior knowledge of computerize laboratory systems is required.

Basic knowledge of computers and business applications, i.e. Microsoft Word and Excel is required.

Demonstrates ability to work independently and to think critically in order to effectively solve problems. Has the ability to accept or initiate, implement and evaluate changes.
