BASIC FUNCTION

Responsible for washing dishes and keeping assigned area cleaned. Aids and assists in the dietary department as directed by Dietetic Service Director and/or Cook in accordance with established policies and procedures, applicable federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Washes dishes according to established procedures for manual and/or automatic dishwashing.

2. Stores dishes, etc., in the proper location in a way to prevent contamination.

3. Ensures that dishes, etc. are readily available for next meal.

4. Documents dish machine temperatures, cleaning duties, etc., as assigned.

5. Reports any problems with proper water temperature or sanitizer to the supervisor in a timely manner.

6. Cleans dishwasher area, kitchen equipment and dietary area as directed or assigned.

7. Performs assigned cleaning assignments according to established policies and utilizing the proper cleaning chemicals.

8. Cleans and sanitizes carts.

9. Maintains the security of the department.

10. Ensures that the department is maintained in a safe manner according to established policies.

11. Reports all hazardous conditions/equipment to the supervisor and/or maintenance department.

12. Reports all malfunctioning equipment to the supervisor and/or maintenance department.

13. Reports all accidents/incidents as established by department and/or facility policies.

14. Complete all work assignments within scheduled time frames.

15. Adheres to departmental dress code.

16. Develops and maintains a good working relationship and cooperative attitude with intra-departmental personnel, as well as, other department/personnel within the facility.

17. Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as, a calm environment throughout the department.

18. Maintains confidentiality of all pertinent patient/resident care information to ensure patient/residents rights are protected.

19. Performs other duties as deemed necessary and appropriate, or as may be directed by the Supervisor.

1. Participates in programs designed for inservice education, on-the-job training and orientation classes for newly assigned department personnel.

2. Participates and assists in departmental studies and projects as assigned or that may become necessary.

3. Assists in standardizing the methods in which work will be accomplished.

4. May assist in preparing meals.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Reports to the Dietetic Service Director and/or other supervisors (i.e. cook) as designated by the Dietetic Service Director.

EDUCATION

Must possess as a minimum, a 10th grade education.

EXPERIENCE

None required. On-the-Job training provided.

Any combination of experience and training which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Works in well-lighted/ventilated areas.

2. Sitting, standing, bending, lifting (no more than 25 lbs.) and moving intermittently during working hours.

3. Subject to frequent interruptions.

4. Involved with patients/residents, family members, personnel, visitors, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.

5. Subject to hostile and emotionally upset patients/residents, family members, etc.

6. Communicates with other departments if necessary.

7. Willingness to work beyond normal working hours, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary.

8. Subject to sudden temperature changes.

9. Attend and participate in continuing educational programs.

10. Subject to falls, cuts, burns from equipment, hot water/foods, infectious diseases, odors, etc., throughout the workday.

11. May be exposed to heat/cold temperatures in kitchen/storage area.

1. Must be able to read, write and speak the English language in an understandable manner.

2. Possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.

3. Possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, patient/residents, family members, visitors, etc.

4. Must have patience, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as, be willing to handle patients/residents based on whatever maturity level they are currently functioning.

5. Be a minimum of eighteen (18) years of age.

6. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions.

7. Maintain the care and use of supplies, equipment, appearance of work areas, safety and proper performance of assigned duties.

8. Possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing practices.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (With or without the aid of mechanical devices)

1. Must be able to bend, stoop, lift, stir, and move intermittently throughout the workday.

2. Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.

3. Must possess sight/hearing senses, or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately, so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.

4. Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with patients/residents, personnel, and support agencies.

5. Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.

6. Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times, hostile people within the facility.

7. May be required to lift equipment, supplies, etc.
