Job Description

Join the Naval Nuclear Laboratory as a Maintenance Operator If you have a background in plumbing, HVAC, maintenance and repairs on equipment, we are interested in you - apply today

In this role the selected candidate will:

Operate and perform maintenance on the following critical systems Central Heating Plant, steam, circulating water, cooling tower, and compressed air.
Work on rotating shifts on various equipment and systems, that includes checking the operation of designated equipment by observing control gauges and meters and make necessary adjustments to plant equipment to maintain proper operation.
Notify appropriate management and/or utility when equipment operation is below standard, or similar event occurs and deficiencies cannot be readily corrected.
Responding to trouble calls related to immediate issues to help maintain continuity of operations. Identify and develop improvements to existing facilities or methods of operation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Determine material requirements and select appropriate materials to perform a job.
Receive written or oral instructions from supervisor. Work from complex drawings and engineering sketches.
Follow equipment data sheet or job specification requirements.
Review Operator's Daily Report of Plant Inspections to determine conditions requiring special attention.
Follow established procedures and select appropriate tools and materials.
Operate gas, oil or electric low-pressure steam boilers and auxiliary equipment such as compressors, pumps, motor generator sets, centravacs, fans, air conditioners, cooling towers, and heaters to maintain heat, steam, air pressure, water pressure, air temperature, and auxiliary power for plant operations under all operating conditions.
Perform water analysis tests and add specified chemicals in proper amounts to maintain specified water chemical content for proper equipment operation and environmental protection.
Take daily water samples.?Record test results and maintaining logs.
Maintain familiarity with Bettis gas/water piping systems, electrical controls, fire controls, storm sewers, and sanitary sewers in order to make necessary shutoffs, changes, and re-energizing due to power failures or emergencies.
Recommend and assist in the specification of materials needed to replenish on-hand parts and materials, and parts and materials needed to complete job assignments.
Install new or replacement material as required by engineering changes or as deemed appropriate as skill of the craft.

ADDITIONAL GENERAL RESPONSIBILITES

Follow general established procedures and select appropriate tools and materials.
Follow rough engineering sketches and detailed complex drawings.
Maintain clean, safe and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures, and handling and disposing of hazardous chemicals and waste.
Must be able to qualify and maintain qualifications including but not limited to asbestos worker, radiological contamination worker, silica worker and other industrial hygiene areas as necessary.
Perform work in accordance with applicable safety, environmental, radiological and security requirements.
Perform Continuing Training as required.???Employees will attend training and other programs to enhance their skills, as requested
Receive oral or written instructions from management.
Perform equal or lower classified work as directed.
Assignment of such work will be within the occupational progression insofar as possible.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

High school or vocational school graduate or the equivalent with the ability to read, write and perform general mathematics of the variety usually learned in a high school or vocational school course. Must pass a periodic physical examination.

AND

Completion of a state accredited skilled trades program resulting in an educational degree or equivalent in the field of Plumbing or HVAC with 4 years of experience.

OR

Completion of a state approved certified apprenticeship program resulting in qualification of Journeyman or equivalent in the field of Plumbing or HVAC with 4 years of experience.

OR

Stationary Engineer License (Class III minimum identified by National Institute for Uniform Licensing Power Engineers). Experience shall include maintenance and repairs on the equipment serviced with 4 years of experience

Preferred Skills

Preferred to possess a Journeyman qualification from a recognized trade union in the field of Plumbing or HVAC or Stationary Engineer.

Pay Range

$39.99 hourly

Jobs categorized as subject to a collective bargaining agreement will adhere to the pay rates, wage increases, progression schedules, and other parameters identified and negotiated in said agreements. Wages and other compensation details are subject to change based negotiated changes to the collective bargaining agreements.
