The client is seeking an experienced attorney with 8-10 years of legal practice to the team as Deputy General Counsel. The successful candidate will add value to the organization by providing counsel to leadership, guiding decision-making processes, and ensuring all operations comply with legal standards. The candidate will collaborate closely with senior legal staff, providing an opportunity for professional growth in the field of law.

Focus:

  • Provide legal and regulatory compliance oversight for the organization.
  • Coordinate the hiring and management of outside counsel to ensure quality, cost-effectiveness, and consistent billing practices.
  • Act as the legal representative to members and external stakeholders, including state and federal regulators, elected officials, consultants, energy suppliers, and utility companies.
  • Attend Board and General Assembly meetings as required, preparing resolutions, reviewing contracts, and recommending actions for board approval.
  • Assist leadership in anticipating legal issues and developing risk mitigation strategies based on ethical and legal standards.
  • Prepare, review, and negotiate legal documents and contracts to identify and address legal issues.
  • Maintain current organizational documents and ensure statutory compliance.
  • Review and update internal organizational policies and procedures as needed.
  • Handle contractual matters related to electricity and natural gas procurement, renewable energy project development, and associated agreements and financing.
  • Advise on proposed rules and pending legislation that may impact the organization.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple projects effectively.

Skill Set:

  • Bachelors degree and J.D. degree with membership in the Ohio Bar Association in good standing.
  • 8-10 years of legal experience in the energy/utilities industry.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with leadership, staff, board members, regulatory agencies, stakeholders, and vendors.
  • High degree of professionalism, ethics, and integrity.
  • Preferred experience representing clients before state utilities commissions, such as the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal and state energy markets, regulations, and trends.
  • Commitment to the organizations mission and values.
