Job Description

The GI Division at Massachusetts General Hospital is looking for an experienced nurse practitioner or physician assistant ( Advanced Practice Provider Level-III ) to join our fast-paced, ambulatory, academic gastroenterology practice.Under the supervision and direction of the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Manager and faculty of the General GI team, and in accordance with the rules and regulations of Massachusetts governing nurse practitioner and physician assistant practice, the APP will play an important team role with care delivery and continuity for patients with general GI conditions in addition to assisting with Quality, Safety and Population Health Projects.

The APP will be clinically based with 8 clinical sessions with one hour of administrative time given for each clinical session.Working closely with a dedicated team of physicians, APPs, nurses, medical assistants, and patient care coordinators, the APP plays a critical role in delivering direct patient care. The APP will participate in a team-based care approach to see patients diagnosed with various GI disease and disorders. The APP will be responsible for new, urgent and follow up visits.

Clinical:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Will see a variety of new, urgent and follow-up visits.
  • Work collaboratively with members of the GI team including MDs, other advanced practice providers, nurses, medical assistants, and patient service coordinators to ensure excellent patient outcomes and patient experience.
  • Evaluate patients, order tests, procedures, and imaging, and follow up on results and document details in the Epic medical record system.Prescribe medications as needed by patient condition.
  • Provide patient care instructions and document in Epic Wrap Up section as needed.
  • Work closely with the team to answer incoming patient questions (Epic In Basket messages), reply to prescription refill requests.
  • Call patients back as needed to answer/address questions and document in Epic medical record.
  • Follow-up on information requests from referring providers.
  • Assist the team with answering/addressing any patient concerns or complaints.
  • Act as a clinical and administrative resource to other clinical GI sub-specialties.
  • Required to carry a pager during business hours and collaborate with team members to arrange for coverage during off hours.
  • Other job duties as requested by Chief/Clinical Chief of Division of Gastroenterology.

Quality, Safety & Population Health Management:

  • Assist Division Quality Director/Associate Director with ad-hoc quality, safety and population health management projects.

Educational/Departmental Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement routine patient instructions for GI disorders.
  • Acts as a resource to other care providers with questions about general GI disorders and their management.
  • Assist with ongoing clinical research via follow-up visits for certain patients being seen in the GI division.
  • Assist with patient recruitment for clinical research.
  • At request of the Division Quality Director/Associate Director, will participate in MGH and MGB quality initiatives related to GI patient population.
  • Participates in various hospital and system committees as assigned.
  • Attend internal (e.g GI Grand Rounds) and external education meetings and reads appropriate professional journals to maintain and enhance skills and clinical competence. Is encouraged to advance his/her medical and technical skills as appropriate to deliver optimum patient care.
  • Maintain CME requirements for licensure/renewal and board re-certification.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s degree (nurse practitioner; physician assistant).
  • Board certified by appropriate NP or PA organization.
  • Ideally of 2 years of ambulatory GI experience; or 6+ years of APP experience (e.g. internal medicine/primary care).
  • Must be a highly motivated individual who has a proven track record of working with diverse healthcare teams.
  • Must be a team player and work in a collaborative manner with all providers and staff.
  • Must be willing to adapt to change and be flexible in the setting a very complex patient population.
  • Possess the maturity, self-confidence, and ability to develop the clinical initiatives to support the management of GI patients.

WORKING CONDITIONS :

  • Ambulatory practice setting at main MGH Campus in Boston
  • Patient care delivery in exam-rooms.
  • Touch down/administrative desk space provided.
  • Normal business/clinic hours (Mon-Fri).
  • May require occasional attendance at meetings outside of regularly scheduled hours.
