Position Description:

The Circulator RN will have the expertise to plan and oversee the smooth functioning of all aspects of patient care from pre-procedure through post-procedure phase. The registered nurse will have the ability to function in a variety of settings as assigned, based on the needs of the center. Provides nursing care within national and state standards of practice and the policies of the Center. Actively participates in Performance Improvement activities. Maintains professional conduct and appearance. Upholds the Mission of the Center is flexible, reliable, patient-oriented and self-motivated.

License/Certification:

  • RN License (Required)
  • BLS certification (Required)
  • ACLS certification (Preferred)

Qualifications:

  • Current New Jersey Registered Nurse License.
  • Minimum 2 years related experience (OR, Endo, or IR).
  • Certification in IV therapy and telemetry preferred.
  • Computer skills preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify patient, checking name, date of birth, and site verification
  • Perform all circulating duties efficiently
  • Prepare operating room properly, assembling appropriate supplies and equipment needed for procedures
  • Review and confirm surgeon's preference cards for medications, instrumentation, equipment, and implants (if applicable)
  • Supervise and assist scrub technician, as necessary.
  • Ensure proper patient positioning with assistance of surgical team and according to standard policies
  • Adherence to sterile technique when opening sterile packs and supplies
  • Cooperative assistance with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other personnel to provide highest quality patient care
  • Work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary team to ensure efficient flow of surgical schedule, being sure to notify of any changes in a timely manner
  • Scrubbing experience is a plus
  • Responsible for the delivery and documentation of all phases of care, (pre, intra and post­ procedure).
  • Performs patient assessments and meets their educational needs throughout all phases of care.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of patients' developmental needs across the lifespan from 6 months to geriatric.
  • Provides quality patient care as outlined in professional standards of care and the center's policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a safe environment by strict adherence to established safety principles and practice, including, but not limited to universal precautions, hazardous waste management, positioning, and aseptic technique.
  • Reviews and monitors environmental surveillance as assigned (i.e.: temperature and humidity, sterilization logs, high level disinfectants, etc.).
  • Ensures all supplies and equipment are available and functioning in the assigned area.
  • Leads team in room turnover and environmental procedures following established protocols for cleaning of work areas and equipment in established time frames to ensure quick and efficient utilization of areas.
  • Assists with in-service and training and provides ongoing review of related topics to personnel at all levels.
  • Actively participates and attends staff in-services and meetings.
  • Maintains current knowledge of technical developments and use of instrumentation and equipment.
  • Ability to take the charge role as assigned by the Director of Nursing.
  • Assists in product evaluation and recommends cost effectiveness of products.
  • Assists in development of policies and procedures.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively, both verbally and written, with a variety of people, including, but not limited to, physicians, patients and families, physician's office staff, referring facilities and other staff members.
  • Ability to work well in a team and switch roles quickly to accommodate the needs of the center.
  • Knowledge of and/or compliance with AAAHC, DOH, OSHA, HIPAA, ACORN, SGNA, AAMI and other regulatory agencies as required.
  • Ability to answer phones professionally and direct caller to appropriate area for handling of call
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:

  • May be required to stand for long periods of time. Frequent walking, bending, and lifting.
  • Assists with lifting and positioning patients.
  • Ability to push and pull stretchers.
  • Ability to lift and push instruments and equipment, load and unload sterilizers, and stock supplies.
  • Motor coordination and manual dexterity required to operate medical and other equipment and surgical instruments.
  • Exposure to blood and body fluids.
