As the specialist, you will work to ensure students with disabilities have equal access to educational opportunities and campus services. This role involves liaising with students, faculty, staff, and relevant stakeholders to facilitate appropriate accommodations and foster an inclusive educational environment. In this position, you will determine academic adjustments and reasonable accommodation needs of students in adherence to Section 504 and ADA guidelines while maintaining an active caseload of students with documented disabilities. Your responsibilities will include providing students with appropriate referrals based on their needs and circumstances and you will also serve as a sign language interpreter. You will provide accurate interpreting or transliterating services between English and ASL for deaf and hard-of-hearing students as needed.

Additionally, you will participate in campus-wide efforts to improve access for students with mobility support needs and serve as a resource to the university in areas related to adaptive computer technology and other relevant resources. You will monitor and update the disability services database as assigned, ensure accurate and up-to-date information, attend weekly case conferences, and participate in quarterly student orientations as assigned. As the specialist you will document student interactions in a timely and accurate manner, maintain a current schedule, and inform the supervisor of staff development needs to improve department performance. You will also assist with administrative tasks.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in rehabilitation counseling, counseling, counselor education, special education, or another related field
  • Completion of an Interpreter Training Program

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least two years of counseling and/or accommodation experience

Certificates, licenses, and registrations:

  • Certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), National Association of the Deaf, and/ or Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) OR can successfully obtain certification within two (2) years of hiring date

Travel required:

  • Less than 10%

Work Hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
