The Finance Director reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and is responsible for the day-to-day functions and financial management of The Hotline, including budget management, cost-benefit analysis, forecasting, fiscal reporting, audit compliance, and financial and programmatic reporting for government contracts and private grants. The Finance Director is an active leader of the Finance Team and as such, sets the strategic direction for the department, supervises departmental staff, establishes goals/outcomes in collaboration with the CFO, monitors and communicates progress, and ensures financial alignment and support of organizational objectives.
Job Location: Hybrid in Austin TX.
Compensation: $140,000.00 annually
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
- Provide management oversight of all accounting, payroll, and financial statement reporting activities, including budget tracking, analysis, and reporting on agency program operations.
- Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate US GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain internal control compliance and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, program/department budgets, and actual expenditures and assist in the proper design of controls and remediation of deficiencies.
- Coordinate and lead annual audit processes.
- Help facilitate the annual budget processes for the organization.
- Lead the annual indirect rate calculation for negotiation with federal agency.
- Consistently review and analyze accounting data and present financial preliminary reports in an accurate and timely manner to the CFO.
- Support the CFO when needed in engaging the Board Finance Committee around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
- Timely communicate monthly and annual financial, including grants financial statements to internal stakeholders adhering to internal deadlines.
- Review and analyze preliminary and final financial statements, comparing actual results to the budget with a focus to identify and explain variances, and providing recommendations for appropriate responsive actions to variances.
- Monitor the finance team’s progress and operational changes and keep CFO abreast of the Hotline’s accounting activity and potential issues.
- Oversee all financial, project/program, and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
- Manage program cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the program leadership and CFO; continuously collaborate with program management to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations.
- Collaborate across the agency to educate all staff levels related to finance and accounting procedures and to explore how the finance function can more effectively support program operations and general administration.
- Provide consulting support to staff for accounting, cost management, and budgetary matters relating to program operations.
- Collaborate with program leaders to ensure expenditure tracking tools accurately capture expended funds in compliance with program requirements and accurately report grant expenditures.
- Conduct internal audits, partner with other departments on complex contracts, and provide financial and audit support to members of the Finance team and all Management to ensure proper procurement of all expenditures.
- Review complex transactions and research accounting audit issues as they apply to contracts, grants, and any other resources awarded to the agency.
- Work closely with the CFO in the development, revision, and maintenance of the agency’s financial policies and procedures.
- Participate in the selection, onboarding, and development of new finance and payroll staff.
- Clarify expectations and scope of responsibility with all direct reports, including goals and objectives.
- Collaborate with staff to establish goals and monitor/evaluate progress and provide regular feedback and support, as well as technical assistance.
Requirements
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.
- 5 years of non-profit accounting experience and experience supervising a full cycle accounting function, including grant accounting/management.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Experienced in final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination.
- Successful track record in setting priorities; keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills which support and enable sound decision making.

- Strong verbal and written communication skills to create reports and present to others.
- Demonstrate and promote excellent customer service behavior towards all internal and external stakeholders.

- Up-to-date working knowledge of new laws, regulations, and compliance standards.

- Requires a high level of confidentiality, an above-average level of flexibility, dependability, and sound independent judgment.
- Flexibility to work occasional nights and/or weekends as Finance, Programs, or agency events necessitate.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced accounting degree.
- Data analytics experience.
- Non-Profit accounting software experience, preferably MIP or FE.
- Knowledge of analysis and financial software with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendor.
Other Requirements/Working Conditions
- This is a hybrid role based in Austin, Texas.
- This position is required to be in person at our office in Southwest Austin 2 days a week. Specific days are to be determined by department needs.
- Must have a home workspace that is confidential, secure and free from distraction.
- Must maintain a stable internet connection with at least 10 MBPS download and 2 MBPS upload speeds.
- Must maintain standards of confidentiality related to agency information.
- Prolonged sitting or standing using keyboard, phone, and computer.
