Overview:
The Director of Surgical Services is accountable for the strategic, operational, and financial leadership of the surgical services department on a 24-hour basis. This role ensures high-quality, patient-centered care while aligning with hospital objectives and standards. The Director is also responsible for fostering a dynamic work environment that promotes professional growth, team collaboration, and continuous improvement in surgical services.
Responsibilities:
Leadership and Strategic Direction
· Lead the surgical services department, ensuring alignment with hospital and patient care goals.
· Develop and implement department goals and objectives in collaboration with executive leadership to support hospital-wide initiatives.
· Represent surgical services in community and professional settings to strengthen hospital outreach and partnerships.
Operational Management
· Ensure efficient, high-quality patient care through regular analysis and continuous improvement of core processes.
· Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies, procedures, and performance standards that support best practices and regulatory compliance.
· Maintain effective communication and collaboration with medical staff and other hospital departments to ensure seamless operational workflows.
Financial and Resource Management
· Plan, develop, and manage annual operating and capital budgets, prioritizing cost-effective care and future resource needs.
· Optimize department resources, including staffing, equipment, and supplies, within budget constraints to support operational goals.
· Monitor and improve financial performance by controlling expenses, maximizing productivity, and enhancing revenue opportunities.
Staff Development and Engagement
· Foster a positive, collaborative work environment that supports employee engagement, development, and retention.
· Implement training, continuing education, and career development programs that enhance staff competencies and professional growth.
· Empower team members to make decisions at the point of care, promoting ownership and accountability.
Quality Improvement
· Lead performance improvement initiatives to enhance patient care, service quality, and department efficiency.
· Oversee quality assurance programs to ensure compliance with established standards and regulatory requirements.
· Set and monitor metrics for patient outcomes, staff performance, and departmental objectives.
Personnel Management
· Recruit, hire, and mentor qualified staff, ensuring adequate staffing levels and a skilled, diverse workforce.
· Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide coaching and feedback, and take corrective action as needed.
Qualifications:
Required
Preferred
Education:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; associate's degree in nursing.
BSN, MSN, or CNOR
Experience:
Minimum of ten years' current experience in perioperative surgical services.
Minimum of five years' current leadership, staff development and progressive management experience.
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:
Current RN license for the state of Arkansas.
Current BLS from AHA with re-certification every 2 years.
ACLS and PALS certification within one year
CNOR certification, continuing education requirement to retain certification; MSN
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Continuing education in management
Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English
