Project Overview

This role involves working on a large-scale project to design, construct, and commission a radioactive waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy. The facility will use vitrification technology to process and solidify millions of gallons of radioactive and chemical waste, which are byproducts of historical plutonium production

The project spans 65 acres (26 hectares) and includes several nuclear facilities, such as Pretreatment, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification, High-Level Waste Vitrification, and Analytical Laboratory, along with operations, maintenance, and support buildings. This is a highly complex environmental cleanup effort that will have a significant impact on long-term waste management.

The position is located on-site, 22 miles north of Richland, WA, with a 4x10 schedule (M-Th, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.). The selected candidate must also be available to work night shifts (5:30 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.) and weekends as required.

Position Summary

Under limited supervision, the Industrial Hygienist III will implement and oversee industrial hygiene programs related to employee safety, public safety, and occupational health. This role provides technical support to ensure compliance with environmental, safety, and health (ES&H) standards and relevant federal and state regulations. The incumbent will develop, monitor, and maintain hygiene programs, assess hazards, conduct workplace investigations, recommend safety improvements, and offer technical guidance and training.

Responsibilities

  • Promote a strong safety and quality culture to protect people and the environment.
  • Provide technical support to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations at both office and field operations.
  • Evaluate equipment, structures, and ongoing work to ensure compliance with regulatory and safety standards.
  • Recommend specifications and technological solutions to meet the project’s objectives.
  • Prepare and review technical reports, compliance documents, and correspondence
  • Obtain and maintain relevant permits
  • Develop and implement industrial hygiene programs, including necessary processes, procedures, and specifications.
  • Create and conduct industrial hygiene training programs as needed.
  • Perform statistical analysis of industrial hygiene data
  • Provide mentorship to junior hygienists on sampling methods and data interpretation.
  • Conduct sampling, monitoring, and occupational health surveys to ensure compliance with established programs.
  • Pursue or maintain ABIH Certification in Industrial Hygiene (CIH)

Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Health, or Industrial Hygiene from an accredited institution, with 6+ years of relevant experience
  • Alternatively, 12 years of experience in a nuclear, heavy construction, chemical processing, or petroleum refining environment in lieu of a degree.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Additional Qualifications:

  • ABIH Certification (CIH) or in pursuit.
  • Experience working in nuclear, heavy construction, chemical processing, or petroleum refining environments
