GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Works under general supervision and following established procedures, the MRI Technologist safely operates the Magnetic Resonance Imaging scanner to acquire images for use by physicians in diagnoses and treatment of pathologies. Exercises independent judgment to modify scan techniques for optimal scan acquisition. Consults the appropriate content expert (Radiologist, Nurse, Supervisor, etc.) as necessary for each situation. Staff will be required to float among radiology clinics associated with BWH as needed. These sites are, but not limited to: 75 Francis Street Boston MA., 850 Boylston Street Chestnut Hill MA, 20 Patriot Place Foxboro, MA. and 711 West Center Street West Bridgewater, MA.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Reviews MRI order for exam and indications.
  2. Reviews scan protocol and ensures that it has been entered for each exam.
  3. Performs venipuncture following established Departmental policies and procedures.
  4. Administers IV contrast agents.
  5. Maintains ACLS certification.
  6. Performs all duties pertaining to the performance of clinical and research MRI Exams.
  7. Screens patients for MRI safety and is responsible for patient positioning, coil, and protocol selection.
  8. Controls access into the MRI environment for non-MRI personnel. Is responsible for maintaining a safe MRI environment. Confirms patient's name, date of birth, medical record number and MRI exam ordered with each patient.
  9. Prepares and cleans the equipment and scanner room for each patient. Stocks and supplies room as needed.
  10. Performs daily quality assurance on MRI scanners and verifies the safe operation of all other patient equipment to be used during the work day. Notifies appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and needed repairs.
  11. Operates control console for each patient's scan including selection of proper imaging protocols to image the designated body part/s. Operates various peripheral hardware and software. Enters patient data at start of examination and monitors data acquisition during procedure. Transfers patient images to PACs once exam is complete. Alerts the radiologist of any urgent finding. Archives image data to optical disc or DVD.
  12. Transfers, positions, immobilizes, and instructs patients in order to obtain the desired diagnostic imaging study as ordered by the requesting physician and protocolled by the radiologist.
  13. Exercises sound independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative under pressure and in a variety of situations.
  14. Utilizes Radiology Information Systems (Percipio, IDXrad, PACS/Centricity) to schedule, arrive, complete, archive, and send all patient and exam information.
  15. Documents scans all paperwork into RMS Scanning system.
  16. Works collaboratively with Assistant Chief Technologist and Lead Technologists to ensure smooth, efficient patient flow and optimal utilization of MRI scanners.
  17. Maintains ethical standards (patient confidentiality, professional conduct, etc.).
  18. Delivers patient care within the scope of certification/training.
  19. Maintains effective working relationships and communication with all departmental staff and other hospital personnel.
  20. Remains up-to-date on developments and trends in MR imaging techniques, procedures, and equipment. Participates in educational programs and meets National and State requirements for continuing education credits.
  21. May oversee and instruct MRI technologists and students within the department.
  22. Demonstrates and instructs professional staff and students on MRI equipment operation and other technical aspects.
  23. May be required to work with lab animals for research purposes.
  24. Rotates within department, divisions and all off site clinics, by shifts as required and needed; cooperates with all personnel, promoting harmony within department.
  25. Performs point-of-care (POC) creatinine testing at applicable sites and upon completion of training.
  26. Performs all other duties as required and directed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Must be a graduate of an approved school of Medical Imaging; and be registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or equivalent.
  2. Be Registered or eligible for certification in MRI by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or equivalent. Must meet, successfully complete, and maintain the ARRT or equivalent certification and registration within one year of start of employment.
  3. 2-3 years' experience as a Radiologic technologist preferred with at least one year in a specialty such as CT scan, or angiography.
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
  1. Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.
  2. Must have analytical abilities necessary to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of magnetic resonance imaging techniques, methods, and knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy.
  3. Proficiency with Radiology and Hospital Information Systems (Percipio, IDXrad, LMR, BICS, PACS/Centricity, Safety Reporting, RMS Scanning, etc.) relating to patient information and management.
  4. Awareness of hazards within the department, (Magnetic Field, standard precautions, etc.), and adhere to safety standards established by BWH and regulatory agencies.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  1. Exposure to magnetic fields and radio frequencies.
  2. Exposure to human waste and other similar unpleasant elements.
  3. Periodic exposure to noise and cold equipment.
  4. Subject to frequent stressful situations.
