POSITION SUMMARY

Neonatal/Pediatric Respiratory Care Clinical Manager - Night Shift

This position is needed as an evening/night management position overseeing PICU, PCICU, NICU, Acute Care floors, Peds ED, External Transport, POC Testing, and other operations of the Children's Center Respiratory Care services. The position provides clinical decision support, clinical education, and resources for services throughout the Children's Center. The evening/night manager will also lead the educational program for the respiratory care department and oversee the orientation and ongoing education of new team members to improve retention. The position is responsible for staff management in SuccessFactors and scheduling aspects of WorkForce Management. The evening/night manager is uniquely positioned to participate in developing emerging operational processes and cooperate in process improvement and staff/program development. Acts as an administrative, clinical, and technical resource to the Respiratory Care, nursing, and physician staff. Coordinates respiratory care operations within the department and clinical activities for Respiratory Care Services. The evening/night manager orients, evaluates, hires, initiates progressive discipline up to termination, and leads the clinical staff at the direction of the technical director-functions as a Respiratory Care Practitioner when needed.

  • Utilizes evidence-based practice and unit-specific competencies to assess the physical condition and respiratory needs of the patient to develop a plan of care in a collaborative practice with the interprofessional team.
  • Monitors compliance with standards of care by observation, verbal reports, audits, and written documentation, and provides feedback to staff, educators, managers, and directors.
  • Participates/coordinates team to allow for active participation in multidisciplinary rounds to promote continuity of care and improved outcomes.
  • Along with the bedside RCP, assists with the plan of care for patients in collaboration with the interprofessional team to provide the highest quality of care and clinical outcomes.
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise in the provision of all respiratory care modalities that are age appropriate and culturally specific to maintain balance within the unit.
  • Provides consultation and maintains positive relationships with physicians, nursing, and other inter-professional team members, collaborating to problem-solve and support patient care to improve clinical outcomes.
  • Functions as the clinical and technical resource in all respiratory care modalities and with all equipment across the spectrum of respiratory care.
  • Collaborates with the scheduling committee to support staffing needs, monitors staffing levels each shift, and provides input to the Director in budget preparation/monitoring and in the identification of workload variability to predict and plan for appropriate staffing to enhance productivity/efficiency while maintaining quality care.
  • Identifies ways to improve the patient's experience, streamline care processes, and lower costs while improving patient, family, and staff satisfaction.
  • As an empathetic leader, maintains a work environment that is positive, and highly supportive of a professional role to retain expert respiratory therapists.
  • Demonstrates the ability to reduce as well as manage risks to reduce and or prevent crises.
  • Performs skillfully in life-threatening emergencies including matching demands and resources during crisis situations.
Knowledge/skills:
  • Requires expert knowledge of all equipment and techniques used in respiratory care for age-specific populations. Knowledge in the clinical application and use of equipment including the following: mechanical ventilators, home ventilators, and Bipap machines, as well as all appropriate equipment used to treat patients with cardio-pulmonary diseases. Requires expert knowledge of airway management in chronic pulmonary patients including cleaning and maintenance of tracheostomy tubes.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills are required to direct and participate in projects with all staff and university faculty. Expert skill in applying respiratory care procedures and techniques to provide pulmonary care along with the skill to lead and direct staff. The ability to develop scheduling patterns and implement staffing models.
Education:

Minimum Associates Degree in Respiratory Care (or equivalent) required. Graduation from a Registered Respiratory Therapy Program approved by the Commission for the Accreditation of Respiratory Care Education (CoARC). Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Care or another associated bachelor's degree preferred.

Work Experience:

Three or more years of critical care experience are required.

Licensure/Certification:
  • A registered Respiratory Therapist credential by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) is required.
  • Current Maryland Respiratory Care Practitioner Licensure
  • Graduate of a Registered Respiratory Therapy Program approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC)
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from the American Heart Association
